Ask AsterNym anything

An assistant that can only tell you what this site already says. It reads from our own articles, shows you which ones, and admits it when the answer is not here.

This assistant can only tell you things AsterNym has already written. Every answer is drawn from the 200-odd articles and reference pages on this site and shows its sources. Ask it something the site does not cover and it says so rather than inventing an answer — that is enforced by not calling the model at all when nothing here matches.

How it is stopped from making things up

Telling a language model not to invent things is a request, and a request is not a control. So the constraint is built into the order of operations rather than into the wording of a prompt.

  1. 1Your question is searched against the site, not the model.

Every article, section and FAQ on AsterNym is indexed — a couple of thousand passages. Your question is matched against those first.

  2. 2If nothing here matches, the model is never called.

Not warned, not instructed. Not called. The answer comes from a fixed sentence saying the site does not cover it. This is the actual guarantee.

  3. 3When something does match, the model sees those passages and nothing else.

It is given the matching passages as its only source material and told it has no other knowledge available for answering.

  4. 4Every answer must cite its sources, and the citations are checked.

An answer with no citations came from the model's own weights rather than from the site, so it is discarded rather than shown to you. Citations pointing at sources that do not exist are stripped.

None of this makes it infallible. A model can still summarise a passage carelessly, so the sources are printed under every answer for you to check — which is the point of showing them.

What it will not do

The same limits the rest of the site holds itself to. It will not predict a death, diagnose an illness, name the date you will marry or have a child, or give medical, legal or financial advice. Where a tradition makes a claim that has not held up to testing, it carries that through rather than quietly upgrading it.
