Two moments, and why the second is not 88 days ago
Every Human Design chart uses two astronomical snapshots. The first is your birth moment, which produces the Personality — the conscious side. The second produces the Design, the unconscious side, and it is the part most home-made calculators get wrong.
The Design moment is not 88 days before birth. It is the moment the Sun was exactly 88 degrees of arc earlier along the ecliptic. Because the Earth's orbit is elliptical the Sun does not move at a constant rate — between about 0.95° and 1.02° a day — so 88° of arc lands anywhere from roughly 86.6 to 92.0 days before birth depending on the time of year.
That difference is up to four days. Four days is about fifty degrees of Moon, which is nine gates. Using a fixed 88-day offset does not shift a chart slightly; it produces a different chart. This engine solves the exact timestamp numerically, to better than a second, and shows you the answer it found.
Why we show the conventions
Human Design calculators disagree with each other, and almost never because one of them has bad astronomy. They disagree because of two settings that are rarely disclosed: whether the lunar node is the mean node or the true node, and whether planetary positions include light-time and aberration.
The two node conventions can sit over a degree and a half apart — a third of a gate — so they genuinely produce different charts for some people. Both are stated in the calculation panel above, along with everything else, so if your chart here differs from one you have seen elsewhere you can find out why rather than guess.
Where one of your activations sits within a hundredth of a degree of a gate or line edge, the panel says so explicitly. That is the situation where a different convention could legitimately give a different answer, and it seemed better to name it than to present a coin-flip as a fact.
If you do not know your birth time
Some Human Design tools check midnight, noon and midnight again, find them the same and tell you the chart is stable. That does not follow — a result can change during the day and change back, so three matching samples can hide two transitions.
This one calculates your chart across the whole day, detects every point where a result changes, and solves each of those boundaries to the second. You get the list of time windows and what each one produces — and where a result holds across the entire day, you get told that too, which is a real answer rather than a hedge.
What Human Design actually is
A system assembled in 1987, combining the astrological chart with the I Ching's 64 hexagrams, the chakra system and the Kabbalistic tree of life. It is young as these things go, it has a single origin rather than a long tradition behind it, and none of its claims have been tested against outcomes.
The calculation is exact and reproducible; what it is said to mean is interpretation. We keep those two things visibly apart on this page, and the only honest question about the second is whether you find it useful.
