Privacy Policy

AsterNym is operated by Moat Ventures, located in Hong Kong (registered in Hong Kong; registered address available on request). For applicable data-protection laws, Moat Ventures is responsible for deciding how and why your personal information is processed. Privacy questions and requests go to hello@asternym.com with the subject “Privacy request”. We answer within 30 days. There is no separate privacy mailbox yet; the same inbox handles it.

When you use AsterNym without an account, your name and birth profile are calculated and stored in your browser’s local or session storage. This device-only approach applies to adult guests and to child profiles created by a parent or guardian in parent mode.

Device-only profiles are not stored in an AsterNym account or synchronized across devices. What can leave the device is listed in section 3: the first name for the name lookup, the city text for the city lookup, rounded coordinates and the date for birth weather if you open it, family birth details for Shared Places while the maps are computed, your question for Ask AsterNym, and the names, message and payment details you enter at checkout. You can remove device-only information using the delete option provided in the product or by clearing AsterNym’s site data in your browser.

Account information

If you are 18 or older and create an account, we process: your email address; your name and birth profile, including birth date, time and place; the version and date of the Terms you accepted; authentication and session information; and account creation, update and deletion timestamps. We use this information to authenticate you, generate your report and synchronize it across your devices.

Name and city lookups

Some features require narrow lookups. Name popularity: your first name is used to search historical naming records; your birth date, time and place are not included in this lookup. Birth city: for eligible adult features, the city text you enter is used to find matching places, coordinates and time-zone information. These requests are handled by AsterNym’s own servers, which hold the reference datasets. They are not forwarded to third-party lookup services. The two features that do send information to a third party, birth weather and Ask AsterNym, are described below.

Birth weather

If you open the birth-weather feature, your birth date, time zone and birthplace coordinates, rounded to about one kilometre before they leave AsterNym, are sent to Open-Meteo, a third-party historical weather archive, to retrieve modelled conditions for that day. Your name and birth time are not sent. The result is an estimate for a weather-model grid cell of several kilometres, not a measurement at your address.

Ask AsterNym

Ask AsterNym composes its answers with a language model run by Anthropic. Each question sends to Anthropic: your question, passages from AsterNym’s own pages and, if you are signed in, chart facts computed on AsterNym’s server from the profile saved on your account: your birth date and whether a time was given, planetary signs, Day Master, zodiac animal, numerology numbers, Kua number and any dates or lists a calculator produced for the question. Your name and birthplace are not sent. A guest’s device-only profile is never sent, so a guest’s answer is not personalised. The model never calculates anything. Anthropic processes the request under its API data terms.

Shared Places

Family birth details entered in Shared Places are sent to AsterNym’s server once, used to compute the maps, and discarded when the response is returned. They are not stored, logged or attached to an account.

The system handling a lookup may also process ordinary connection information such as an IP address, browser type and request timestamp. We do not combine that technical information with your complete birth profile for advertising.

Readings in your browser, and readings by API

A reading you run on the site is computed in your browser from details kept on your device. A reading requested through the public API by an AI agent is computed on our server from the details the agent sends, returned, and not stored; we record which agent called, the browser or tool identifier it sent, whether a time or place was given, and the hashed address described below, never the birth details. If the agent sends them in a web address rather than in the request body, that address can appear in hosting and network logs outside our control, which is why the API documentation asks agents to use the body.

Technical and security information

Our hosting and security infrastructure may process: IP address, browser and device type, requested page, request date and time, and error and security information. We use this to deliver the service, prevent abuse, investigate errors and protect accounts. We do not use it to create advertising profiles.

Approximate location

We record the country and region a visit came from, so we can see which countries AsterNym is reaching. Our hosting provider works this out from your IP address at the network edge and passes us only the result: we never receive or store the IP address itself for visits to the site’s pages. The one exception is the public API for AI agents (/for-agents), where a one-way hash of the calling address is recorded so a fair-use limit can work across our servers; the address itself is not stored, and the hash cannot be turned back into it.

We deliberately do not record your city, even though it is available to us on the same request. Country and region answer the only question we have, which places people are visiting from, and a city stored against a device is a more personal record than that question needs.

Anonymous device identifier

On first visit AsterNym stores a random identifier in your browser. It is not derived from your name, email or birth details. It is used for aggregate product measurement (which pages lead to a reading, which variant of a page performs better) and for the country and region record above. It accompanies analytics events and, at checkout, the order record, so a purchase can be attributed to the pages that led to it. If you create an account, the identifier is linked to it so we can see which steps preceded a sign-up; deleting the account deletes that link. Clearing AsterNym’s site data resets the identifier.

Email information

AsterNym uses Resend to deliver one-time sign-in codes and essential account or purchase messages. Resend receives your email address and the information required to deliver and troubleshoot those messages. Creating an account does not automatically subscribe you to marketing. Promotional messages are sent only when you separately choose to receive them, and you may unsubscribe at any time.

The daily reading email

If you switch it on from the Today page, AsterNym sends one email each morning containing your reading for the day, composed on our server from the profile saved on your account, at the hour and in the time zone you chose. We store the time zone, the hour, the edition and the date last sent. Every message carries a one-click unsubscribe that needs no sign-in, and stopping it deletes nothing else.

Purchase information

When you purchase a star dedication, gift or physical product, Stripe processes your payment information. AsterNym does not receive or store your complete payment-card number. We may store: your account or customer identifier; order and transaction identifiers; product purchased and amount paid; the dedication name, the giver’s name and the message, which are also sent to Stripe with the checkout session so the order can be fulfilled; payment and subscription status; billing country and applicable tax information; delivery information for physical products; and customer-support correspondence. Payment and tax records may be retained where required for accounting, fraud prevention or legal compliance.

Public star dedications

A star dedication is intended to appear publicly in the AsterNym Galaxy. Information you choose to publish includes the dedication name, your message, the associated star and its coordinates, and the dedication date. Do not include private information that you or another person would not want displayed publicly.

Public-figure profiles

Famous profiles use publicly available information from sources such as Wikidata and the sources linked on each profile. We use this information to calculate and display cultural and entertainment-based comparisons. A person or authorized representative may request a correction or removal by contacting hello@asternym.com.

Depending on the feature and applicable law, we process information: to provide the service or fulfill a purchase you requested; with your consent for optional features or communications; to protect the service and prevent abuse; to comply with tax, accounting and legal obligations; and for our legitimate interest in maintaining, troubleshooting and improving a privacy-conscious service.

AsterNym’s automated readings and compatibility results are for reflection and entertainment. They are not used to make decisions that produce legal or similarly significant effects about you.

We use service providers that process limited information on our behalf: hosting and content delivery: Vercel; transactional email: Resend; payments, Stripe; database and authentication: Neon and Vercel. Geographical and name-popularity lookups run on AsterNym’s own servers against locally-held datasets. Ask AsterNym answers are composed by Anthropic; birth weather comes from Open-Meteo (both described in section 3). We use Google Analytics 4 for aggregate traffic measurement, and only after you allow its cookies (section 7). Google receives your IP address with each measurement request, uses it to derive a coarse location and, by its own design for Analytics 4, does not log or store it. We have disabled Google Signals and advertising personalisation for the property. We use no third-party error-monitoring or advertising trackers.

These providers may process information only as needed to perform their services and under their respective contractual and legal obligations. We do not sell personal information. We do not share it for cross-context behavioural advertising, and AsterNym does not contain third-party advertising trackers or pixels.

Name-popularity information comes from the United States Social Security Administration’s public baby-name data. Place and time-zone information comes from the GeoNames geographical database, used under its applicable attribution licence. Astronomical calculations use Hipparcos-derived star positions, the IAU Catalog of Star Names, the Tycho-2 catalogue (CDS I/259), the HYG stellar database and the astronomy-engine ephemeris library (which implements the VSOP87 planetary theory and includes precession and nutation). Historical birth-hour weather is a modelled estimate retrieved from the Open-Meteo archive of the ERA5 reanalysis. Public-figure facts come from Wikidata and the sources cited on each profile.

AsterNym intentionally sets one essential cookie, asternym_session, after you sign in. It keeps your account session active for up to 30 days and is not used for advertising. Google Analytics sets first-party _ga and _ga_<id> cookies that distinguish returning browsers for aggregate measurement. They last up to two years and are not strictly necessary, so the Analytics tag loads only after you allow it in the banner on your first visit. Declining changes nothing about the site. The application also uses browser storage to maintain device-only profiles, the device identifier, your bookmarks and product preferences. Payment pages or infrastructure providers may use additional strictly necessary technologies under their own policies.

Device-only profiles remain until you delete them or clear AsterNym’s browser data. Account profiles remain until you delete the account.

Deleted account profiles are removed from active systems immediately. Encrypted backups may retain deleted records for up to 30 days before automatic expiry. Security and operational logs are retained for 90 days. Transaction and tax records are retained for seven years, as required by Hong Kong law. Public star-dedication records remain visible while the dedication is active; after cancellation or lapse the record is archived. Archived means the dedication no longer appears on public registry pages, in search or on the star's page. The order record is kept for the retention period stated in the Privacy Policy, and the star becomes available to another customer.

Removal and deletion are different. Removal takes something out of public view (a dedication, a famous profile) while the record may be kept for the periods above. Deletion erases the record. Ask for whichever you need; a deletion request is met with deletion unless a legal retention period applies, and we say so if it does.

Minimal records may be retained when reasonably required to document consent, resolve disputes, prevent fraud or comply with law.

AsterNym is not available for independent use by anyone under 18. Someone under 18 cannot create a profile of their own, with or without an account. The age check runs before anything is calculated, so nothing about them is computed or stored.

A signed-in parent or legal guardian may create a child reading in parent mode after confirming that relationship. The reading remains on the parent’s device: AsterNym does not transmit or store child profiles on its servers, the reading is not attached to the account, and bookmarks and syncing never include it. The optional name-popularity lookup sends the child’s first name only, and only if the parent switches it on.

Before any future feature would send information about a child outside that device, AsterNym will require verifiable parental consent from the parent’s signed-in, email-verified account, state exactly what would be sent and where, and update this policy first.

Parents may contact hello@asternym.com to review or delete information processed about their child or withdraw permission for further processing.

Our service providers may process information in countries other than your own, including the United States, where our hosting and email providers operate. Where required, we use recognized transfer mechanisms and contractual safeguards. You may contact us for more information about the safeguards applicable to your information.

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to: request access to your personal information; correct inaccurate information; delete your information; restrict or object to certain processing; receive a portable copy of information you provided; withdraw consent for optional processing; and opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information. AsterNym does not sell personal information or share it for targeted advertising.

To exercise a right, use the available account controls or contact hello@asternym.com from the email associated with your account, with the subject “Privacy request”. We reply within 30 days. We may request reasonable information to verify that the account belongs to you. You may also have the right to complain to the privacy or data-protection authority where you live. We will not discriminate against you for exercising a privacy right.

We use reasonable technical and organizational measures designed to protect personal information. However, no online service can guarantee absolute security. You are responsible for protecting access to your email account and signing out of AsterNym on shared devices.

We may update this policy as AsterNym changes. The effective date at the top identifies the current version. If a change materially affects how account information is used, we will provide reasonable notice before the change takes effect where required.
