A scoring system for how comfortably a planet sits, and the backbone of traditional judgement.

The answer
Essential dignity grades how well a planet operates in the sign it occupies. In domicile it sits in the sign it rules and is strongest. In exaltation it sits in a sign of special honour. In detriment it occupies the sign opposite its domicile, and in fall the sign opposite its exaltation; both read as difficult. The scheme is central to traditional practice and largely absent from modern psychological astrology.
The four conditions

The exaltation table
Sun in Aries, Moon in Taurus, Mercury in Virgo, Venus in Pisces, Mars in Capricorn, Jupiter in Cancer, Saturn in Libra, each falling in the opposite sign. Mercury is both domiciled and exalted in Virgo, which is unique. The exaltations follow no obvious principle; they are an inherited list with debated Babylonian origins.
Dignities are the best thing modern astrology threw away, and I'd put them back in every beginner's first lesson.
What the grading claims
A planet in detriment works against its own grain. Mars is direct action; Libra is negotiation; Mars in Libra pursues its ends through a mode that doesn't suit it. That is a statement about how one symbolic factor sits inside another, not a verdict on the person, however often 'debilitated' gets read that way.
Why modern astrology dropped it
The psychological turn stopped grading placements as good or bad, and a scheme that scores some as debilitated lost its role. Something was lost with it: a rule-governed way of saying some placements are harder before interpretation begins. The traditional revival has brought it back, alongside sect.
