Essential dignities: domicile, exaltation, detriment, fall
A scoring system for how comfortably a planet sits — the backbone of traditional judgement.

The short answer
Essential dignity grades how well a planet operates in the sign it occupies. A planet in domicile sits in the sign it rules and is strongest. In exaltation it sits in a sign of special honour. In detriment it occupies the sign opposite its domicile, and in fall the sign opposite its exaltation — both read as difficult. The scheme is central to traditional practice and largely absent from modern psychological astrology.
The four conditions

Two further conditions, triplicity and terms or bounds, add finer gradations and are used in fuller traditional work. Together the scheme produces a numerical dignity score for each planet.

Note that Mercury is both domiciled and exalted in Virgo, which is unique and gives it an unusually strong position there. Note also that the exaltations are not derivable from any obvious principle — they are an inherited list, and their origins are debated, with proposed connections to Babylonian astronomy and to particular degrees rather than whole signs.
What the grading claims
Not that a planet in detriment is bad, but that it operates against its own grain. Mars is assertion and direct action; Libra is balance, negotiation and consideration of others. Mars in Libra must pursue its ends through a mode that does not suit it.
That is a coherent idea and it is worth stating precisely, because 'debilitated' is often read as a verdict on the person. It is a statement about how comfortably one symbolic factor sits inside another.
Traditional practice then combines essential dignity with accidental dignity — house placement, angularity, speed, aspects — to judge a planet's overall condition. See house strength.
Why modern astrology dropped it
The twentieth-century psychological turn moved away from grading placements as good or bad. If every placement is an aspect of the psyche with constructive and difficult expressions, a scheme that scores some as debilitated has no obvious role.
Something real was lost with it. Dignity gives traditional astrology a way to say that some placements are harder than others, in a rule-governed way, before interpretation begins. Without it, everything becomes equally valid and equally unfalsifiable — a version of the problem set out in is astrology a science.
