Each sign has a ruling planet that acts as its natural significator. Traditionally: Aries and Scorpio are ruled by Mars, Taurus and Libra by Venus, Gemini and Virgo by Mercury, Cancer by the Moon, Leo by the Sun, Sagittarius and Pisces by Jupiter, Capricorn and Aquarius by Saturn. Modern practice reassigns Scorpio to Pluto, Aquarius to Uranus and Pisces to Neptune. The most practically useful application is your chart ruler — the planet ruling your rising sign, traditionally read as standing for you.

The logic of the traditional scheme
The old arrangement is not a list, it is a pattern, and seeing it makes the whole thing memorable.
The Sun rules Leo and the Moon rules Cancer — adjacent signs, at the height of summer when both luminaries are strongest. From that axis, the remaining five planets fan outward symmetrically in order of orbital speed: Mercury takes the signs either side, then Venus, then Mars, then Jupiter, then Saturn at the furthest remove.
So Mercury rules Gemini and Virgo, the signs adjacent to Cancer and Leo. Venus rules Taurus and Libra, the next pair out. And Saturn — slowest and most distant of the visible planets — rules Capricorn and Aquarius, directly opposite the luminaries.

How to actually use rulership
Three practical applications
- Find your chart ruler and read its placement carefully. It is the single most useful application of the whole scheme.
- Check for dignity. A planet in the sign it rules is strengthened; one in the opposite sign is said to be in detriment. This is the traditional way of assessing how comfortably a planet operates.
- Follow the chain. The ruler of a house's sign tells you where that area of life is directed. If your seventh house is Libra, Venus rules your partnerships, and wherever Venus sits is where the tradition says to look.
