The short answer
The Part of Fortune is a calculated point marking where the Moon would be if the Sun were rising. By day the formula is Ascendant plus Moon minus Sun; by night it reverses to Ascendant plus Sun minus Moon. Many free calculators apply the day formula regardless, which puts the point up to half the zodiac away from where it belongs. It requires an exact birth time.
The sect problem
This is the single most common error in Part of Fortune calculation, and it is easy to check.
The formula depends on whether you were born with the Sun above or below the horizon — your sect. Day charts use ASC + Moon − Sun; night charts use ASC + Sun − Moon.
Reversing the last two terms reflects the point across the Ascendant axis, which can move it by up to 180 degrees. A calculator that ignores sect will be right for roughly half its users and badly wrong for the rest.

The honest caveat
It is a calculated point rather than a body. Nothing is physically there — it is an arithmetic combination of three positions, and it moves as fast as the Ascendant does, roughly a degree every four minutes.
There is no evidence that it indicates anything. What can be said is that the calculation is exact and reproducible, and that the tradition is old and internally consistent.
