Qi Men Dun Jia vs Da Liu Ren: which answers which question
Both build a chart from the moment a question is asked. One tells you what to do; the other tells you what is. Pick by the question.

Both build a chart from the moment a question is asked, and both are Three Rites arts, but they answer opposite kinds of question. Qi Men Dun Jia (奇門遁甲) is prescriptive and spatial: it produces a nine-palace grid of doors, stars and deities used to choose a direction, a timing and a course of action. Da Liu Ren (大六壬) is diagnostic and relational: it produces lessons and transmissions used to describe what is happening between the parties in a matter. Qi Men is traditionally the strategist's art and was treated as military knowledge. Da Liu Ren is the investigator's.

Qi Men Dun Jia in one paragraph
The name means roughly 'mysterious gates, hiding the jia'. A chart is a three-by-three grid of nine palaces, each carrying a Door, a Star, a Deity and stems, laid out by the solar term and the hour. The reading picks out favourable palaces, and because each palace maps to a compass direction, the advice comes out as: go this way, at this time, and approach it like this.
That spatial quality is why it was treated as a military art. Legend attaches it to the Yellow Emperor and to Zhuge Liang, which is legend rather than history, but it tells you how the classical texts understand themselves.
If I had to pick one, Qi Men, because it at least tells you what to do. Da Liu Ren tells you what is, then leaves.
Da Liu Ren in one paragraph
Two plates of the twelve Earthly Branches are rotated against each other by hour and month. From the day's stem and branch, four lessons are derived, and from those, three transmissions are extracted. Twelve named generals colour the positions.
The output is a description of relationships and states: who holds the advantage, whether the matter is what it appears to be, how it will develop. It's closer to a diagnosis than a plan.
Which would a practitioner reach for?
The traditional division
- Choosing a direction to travel, a time to launch, a way to approach someone: Qi Men. It's built for it.
- Working out whether something is as it seems, or where a thing is, or who is being straight with you: Da Liu Ren.
- Understanding a person's life shape: neither. That is BaZi or Zi Wei Dou Shu, which read a birth, not a moment.
- A general sense of a situation's character and direction: the I Ching, which is far easier to consult and much harder to over-claim with.
Practitioners who know both often describe using Da Liu Ren to understand and Qi Men to act, in that order. Whether that ordering reflects anything about the world or simply about the systems' outputs isn't something either tradition can settle.
What we will say about both
They're the most technically demanding things in this field, they take years to learn, and there's no evidence that either predicts anything. Those three statements are all true at once and we would rather print all three than pick the flattering two.
AsterNym computes neither, and the reason is on the Da Liu Ren page: the mechanics could be automated, the judgement couldn't, and a calculator that produced the grid and guessed at the reading would be worse than not offering one.
The second reason: we could not check our own answer
There is a plainer objection than the one about judgement, and it applies to Qi Men in particular. A Qi Men plate places nine palaces, three plates and eight gates against a stem-and-branch moment, and the construction diverges between the yin dun and yang dun traditions, between the *zhuan pan* and *fei pan* schools, and between teaching lineages inside each of those. Every version looks equally authoritative on the screen.
Compare that with Flying Star, which we do compute. We could take a published Period 9 chart, put our own output beside it, and check it palace by palace, so the page could say the numbers are right and mean it. There is no equivalent to check a Qi Men plate against. Shipping one would mean asking you to trust a grid that neither of us can audit.

What is the main difference between Qi Men Dun Jia and Da Liu Ren?
Qi Men is prescriptive and spatial, it recommends a direction, a timing and an approach. Da Liu Ren is diagnostic and relational. It describes what is happening in a matter. One is for acting, the other for understanding.
Which is harder to learn?
Both are considered very difficult and both are Three Rites arts. Da Liu Ren is usually described as the more analytically demanding because of its transmission-extraction rules; Qi Men has the larger memorised structure of doors, stars and deities.
Was Qi Men Dun Jia really a military art?
It was treated as one and was restricted knowledge for long periods, so its transmission is patchy. The attributions to the Yellow Emperor and to Zhuge Liang are legendary instead of historical.
Can a website compute these?
The chart mechanics can be automated. The reading can't, both traditions depend on interpretive judgement applied to a sincere question in context. AsterNym computes neither, and explains them instead.
