Hexagram 10 changing to 1: Treading to The Creative
Line 3 changes.
Where it starts: 10 Treading
Careful conduct in a delicate situation: treading on the tiger's tail, and not being bitten. Lake below, heaven above: the gentle and cheerful beneath the strong. Treading is about conduct, about how to move through a situation where a wrong step has real consequences. The tradition's image is of stepping on a tiger's tail without being bitten, and the way that is achieved is with courtesy, care and good humour rather than with force or fear. The reading says you are close to something powerful or dangerous and that your behaviour, moment to moment, decides whether it turns on you. Correct manners, plainly kept, carry you through.
Where it goes: 1 The Creative
Pure creative energy: the strength to begin, and the discipline to keep beginning well. Six unbroken lines, heaven above heaven. This is the hexagram of initiative in its purest form: the capacity to start, to lead, to bring something into being through sustained effort. The tradition compares it to a dragon moving through the stages of a life, hidden at first, then visible, then flying, then at risk of going too far. The reading is strong, and strength here is a responsibility. Whatever you are asking about, the answer is that the energy is available; the question is whether you can keep it steady, humane and on time.
The lines that move
A one-eyed person sees, a lame person walks; they tread on the tiger's tail and are bitten. A warrior acting for a great prince.
Acting beyond your capacity, fooled by partial sight and confidence. The bite follows. The line allows one exception: a person who does this knowingly, in service of something greater than themselves. Do not overestimate what you can see and do; the tiger is real.
What is changing. The situation of Treading is moving toward The Creative. Behave with care and courtesy, especially toward whatever is stronger than you. As the change completes: Move forward with full commitment, and keep your pace steady enough to last.
- love and relationships
- Now: A delicate situation with someone whose reaction you cannot predict. Tact matters more than truth-telling for its own sake. Be kind, be careful, and do not test the tiger to see if it bites. Then: The reading favours honesty and initiative: say what you want and act on it. It warns against dominating the other person. Strength in a relationship is steadiness, not control, and the dragon that flies too high ends up alone.
- career
- Now: You are dealing with a powerful person or a dangerous situation. The reading favours impeccable conduct: polite, correct, unhurried, never presumptuous. Know your place in the order and act from it. Then: A strong reading for ambition, leadership and starting something. The stages matter: do not act like the dragon in the sky while you are still the dragon in the field. Build, become visible, then lead.
- money
- Now: Proceed with care in a situation where a misstep is costly. Read the terms. Do not provoke a stronger party. Modest, correct dealings get through where clever ones get bitten. Then: Energy to earn and to build is high. The caution is overreach. Growth that comes from consistent work holds; growth that comes from a single bold move needs a limit set in advance.
- decisions
- Now: Choose the option that lets you move carefully and correctly. If the decision requires you to step on the tiger, do it with full attention and good manners, not bravado. Then: Act, and act with commitment. The reading supports the decisive option, provided you can sustain it after the first burst of energy. Ask which stage you are at before you leap.
