Hexagram 15 changing to 39: Modesty to Obstruction
Line 5 changes.
Where it starts: 15 Modesty
A mountain inside the earth: real substance carried without display, which the tradition rewards above almost everything. Mountain below, earth above: height held beneath the ground. Modesty is the only hexagram in the book in which every line is favourable, and it describes greatness that does not need to show itself. The tradition's judgement is simple: modesty creates success, and the wise person carries things through. The reading is about levelling, reducing what is too much and adding to what is too little, in oneself and in the situation. It does not mean self-abasement. The mountain is still there; it is simply not making a point of itself.
Where it goes: 39 Obstruction
Water on the mountain, a dangerous ravine ahead: the obstacle is real, and the way is to turn and seek help. Mountain below, water above: a steep mountain with a treacherous stream at its top, an obstacle that cannot be walked through. Obstruction differs from Difficulty at the Beginning: this obstacle is outside you, in the terrain, and it is not passable by persistence alone. The tradition's judgement gives directions: the southwest furthers, the northeast does not, it furthers to see the great person, and persistence brings good fortune. The southwest is the open plain; the reading says to turn toward the easy ground, to seek allies and advice, and above all to turn inward and examine oneself, which the image names as the response to obstruction.
The lines that move
Not boasting of wealth before the neighbour. It is fitting to attack with force. Nothing that does not further.
The one in authority who does not display power, and who, when firmness is required, uses it without hesitation. Modesty is not softness. There are situations that require force, and the modest person applies it plainly. When firmness is needed, use it without display and without apology.
What is changing. The situation of Modesty is moving toward Obstruction. Reduce what is excessive, add to what is lacking, and let substance speak for itself. As the change completes: Turn toward the open ground, seek help, and use the block to examine yourself.
- love and relationships
- Now: Let your actions speak and your claims stay quiet. The reading favours the partner who does the work without needing it noticed. Balance is the theme: give more where you have given little, ask less where you have asked much. Then: An obstacle between you that cannot be bulldozed. Stop pushing, look at your own part in it, and bring in help or perspective from outside. The lines repeatedly favour turning back to gather allies over going forward alone.
- career
- Now: Competence without self-promotion, which in this reading is rewarded rather than overlooked. Do the substantial thing and let it be seen in its own time. Level the team's imbalances rather than standing above them. Then: A real block. Do not attack it head-on. Turn to easier ground, seek advice from someone experienced, and use the pause to work on yourself. The reading treats the obstruction as an occasion for growth rather than a failure.
- money
- Now: Moderation. Reduce excess, cover the shortfalls, avoid display. Wealth handled modestly grows quietly; wealth flaunted draws the attention that costs it. Then: Blocked. Move toward the easier, more open option rather than the difficult one, take advice, and do not throw resources at the obstacle. Persistence is favoured, force is not.
- decisions
- Now: Choose the option that balances rather than the one that impresses. Where you have too much of something, give some up; where too little, add. The modest choice is the one that carries through. Then: Choose the option that goes around, not through: the open plain, not the ravine. Bring in help. If a decision can wait until you have examined your own role in the block, let it.
