Hexagram 18 changing to 50: Work on What Has Been Spoiled to The Cauldron

Line 4 changes.

Where it starts: 18 Work on What Has Been Spoiled

Repairing decay: something has been neglected, and the work is to set it right with care before and after. Wind below, mountain above: wind stopped at the foot of a mountain, air gone stale. The Chinese character shows worms in a bowl. Work on What Has Been Spoiled describes damage that came from neglect or indulgence, often inherited from a previous generation or a previous decision, and the reading is favourable because it says the damage can be repaired. The tradition asks for deliberation before the work begins, three days before and three days after, and it supports crossing the great water: a large task is called for and can be done.

Where it goes: 50 The Cauldron

The ritual vessel: nourishment refined into something worthy, and the person who becomes worthy by it. Wind below, fire above: wood feeding fire, the flame under the great bronze cauldron in which offerings were cooked. The Cauldron is the pair of the Well: where the Well is raw nourishment from nature, the Cauldron is nourishment transformed by culture, cooked, refined and offered. The tradition's judgement is simply supreme good fortune, success. The image is of the wise person consolidating their fate by making their position correct. The reading says the situation is one of refinement and offering: what you have can be transformed into something of real worth, and the worth depends on the vessel being sound, well placed and carried with care.

The lines that move

  1. Line 4

Tolerating what the father spoiled. Going on brings humiliation.

Living with the decay instead of repairing it, out of weakness or convenience. The line is clear that continuing this way ends in humiliation. The problem grows while it is tolerated. Stop tolerating the fault; each day of delay makes it worse.

What is changing. The situation of Work on What Has Been Spoiled is moving toward The Cauldron. Deliberate, repair the decay thoroughly, and watch that it does not return. As the change completes: Refine what you have into something worthy, set the vessel on correct ground, and carry it with care.

love and relationships
Now: Something between you has been let slide, perhaps for a long time, and the reading says it can be mended. Look at how it decayed before you act, act with care, and stay attentive afterwards so it does not slide back. Then: Something raw between you can be cooked into something lasting: a shared life, a home, a culture of your own. The reading is favourable and asks for care with the vessel. Do not spill it by carelessness or overturn it by haste.
career
Now: Fixing what a predecessor left, or what you neglected. The reading favours taking on the repair, including a large one, with proper preparation and follow-through. Blame is not the point; correction is. Then: Transforming ability into something recognised and worthy. The reading strongly favours the work of refinement and the person who does it well. Correct your position, tend the vessel, and the offering will be received.
money
Now: Neglected finances, an inherited mess, a debt let run. It can be sorted. Plan the repair carefully, do it thoroughly, and check it afterwards; half-measures let the rot return. Then: Turning resources into lasting value rather than consuming them. Invest in what refines: skills, tools, the structure that carries the work. The reading is very favourable to careful cultivation.
decisions
Now: Decide to address the decay rather than to work around it. The careful, thorough option is right, even if it is larger. Deliberate first, then act, then watch. Then: Choose the option that transforms and refines rather than the one that merely consumes. Make sure your position is correct before you commit; the cauldron on uneven ground spills.
