Hexagram 18 changing to 52: Work on What Has Been Spoiled to Keeping Still
Line 2 changes.
Where it starts: 18 Work on What Has Been Spoiled
Repairing decay: something has been neglected, and the work is to set it right with care before and after. Wind below, mountain above: wind stopped at the foot of a mountain, air gone stale. The Chinese character shows worms in a bowl. Work on What Has Been Spoiled describes damage that came from neglect or indulgence, often inherited from a previous generation or a previous decision, and the reading is favourable because it says the damage can be repaired. The tradition asks for deliberation before the work begins, three days before and three days after, and it supports crossing the great water: a large task is called for and can be done.
Where it goes: 52 Keeping Still
The mountain doubled: stillness so complete that one keeps the back still and does not feel the body. Mountain below, mountain above: stillness upon stillness. Keeping Still is the hexagram of rest, of the pause between movements, of the mind that has stopped chasing itself. The tradition's judgement is an image of meditation: keeping the back still so that the body is no longer felt, going into the courtyard and not seeing the people there, without blame. Stillness of this kind is not withdrawal from life; the image says the wise person does not let their thoughts go beyond the situation. The reading says the moment asks for stopping, for full attention to what is here, and for restraint of the impulse to move. Every line is a part of the body coming to rest.
The lines that move
Setting right what the mother spoiled. One should not be too persistent.
Repairing a fault that came from indulgence or softness. The line warns against harshness: too much rigour in correcting a gentle error causes new harm. Correct with tact. Fix the soft fault gently; severity here does damage.
What is changing. The situation of Work on What Has Been Spoiled is moving toward Keeping Still. Deliberate, repair the decay thoroughly, and watch that it does not return. As the change completes: Stop; keep the mind within the present situation and let the body rest.
- love and relationships
- Now: Something between you has been let slide, perhaps for a long time, and the reading says it can be mended. Look at how it decayed before you act, act with care, and stay attentive afterwards so it does not slide back. Then: Be still. Do not act, do not push, do not run thoughts ahead to what might happen. The reading favours calm presence over any gesture. Some of the lines describe stillness forced on someone too early; the whole describes stillness chosen, which is what is asked here.
- career
- Now: Fixing what a predecessor left, or what you neglected. The reading favours taking on the repair, including a large one, with proper preparation and follow-through. Blame is not the point; correction is. Then: A pause. Stop, attend to what is in front of you, and do not let the mind race to the next thing. Not the time for initiatives. The reading is favourable for reflection, planning done quietly, and the restraint of ambition for a season.
- money
- Now: Neglected finances, an inherited mess, a debt let run. It can be sorted. Plan the repair carefully, do it thoroughly, and check it afterwards; half-measures let the rot return. Then: Hold. No new positions, no reactions, no plans running ahead of the facts. The reading is for stillness, and stillness with money means doing nothing until there is a real reason to move.
- decisions
- Now: Decide to address the decay rather than to work around it. The careful, thorough option is right, even if it is larger. Deliberate first, then act, then watch. Then: Do not decide; stop. The reading is explicit that thought should not go beyond the situation, which means the decision cannot be made until the situation itself changes. Wait in full attention.
