Hexagram 20 changing to 53: Contemplation to Development

Line 3 changes.

Where it starts: 20 Contemplation

Looking and being looked at: a moment for seeing the whole clearly before anything is done. Earth below, wind above: wind moving across the land, reaching everywhere. The Chinese character means both to observe and to be observed, and the hexagram holds both: a tower from which the whole country can be seen, and a tower that the whole country can see. Contemplation describes a pause for perspective. The tradition's image is of the moment in a ritual after the purification and before the offering, when sincerity is at its highest and nothing has yet been done. The reading asks you to look, honestly, at the whole situation and at yourself, and to understand that you are also being watched.

Where it goes: 53 Development

The wild goose flying stage by stage to its home: gradual, orderly progress that cannot be hurried. Mountain below, wind above: a tree on a mountain, growing slowly, visible from far away. Development describes progress that must be gradual, and the tradition's image is the wild goose migrating in stages: the shore, the cliff, the plateau, the tree, the summit, the cloud heights. The judgement is that the maiden is given in marriage, good fortune, persistence furthers, meaning that the process is like a proper courtship: it has stages, and each must be completed. The reading says the goal is reachable and the way to it is orderly patience. Skipping a stage does not shorten the journey; it ends it.

The lines that move

  1. Line 3

Contemplating my own life decides the choice between advance and retreat.

Self-examination as the basis for action. Not what others think, not what the situation seems to demand, but an honest look at the effects of your own conduct so far. From that, the choice follows. Look at what your actions have produced, and decide from that.

What is changing. The situation of Contemplation is moving toward Development. Take the wide view, examine yourself honestly, and act only once you have seen the whole. As the change completes: Advance in order, stage by stage, and complete each one before the next.

love and relationships
Now: Step back and look at the whole relationship rather than the last argument. See the pattern. The reading also reminds you that how you behave is being observed and forms the other person's view of you. Then: The reading for a relationship developing properly, with its stages honoured: acquaintance, courtship, commitment, home. Do not rush a stage and do not skip one. The goose reaches the summit by landing on every ledge on the way.
career
Now: A time for assessment rather than action: survey the whole field, understand the people, and set an example by how you conduct the survey. Others are watching how you look at them. Then: Steady, staged advancement: the apprenticeship, the first responsibility, the recognition, the seniority. Each stage prepares the next. The reading warns against grabbing at a position two stages ahead; the goose that flies straight to the cloud heights has nowhere to land.
money
Now: Review before you act. Look at the whole financial picture with honesty, including the parts you have been avoiding. Decisions made from this overview are sounder than any made in the moment. Then: Gradual building. The reading supports the patient, staged plan and is against the leap. Each level of security is the foundation for the next; establish it before reaching higher.
decisions
Now: Do not decide yet; see. Take the widest view available, examine your own motives, and let the decision follow from clarity. The pause is not avoidance; it is the offering before the act. Then: Choose the option that takes the next step, not the final one. The reading favours the sequence: what is the stage you are at, and what does it prepare? Decide for that.
