Hexagram 23 changing to 20: Splitting Apart to Contemplation

Line 5 changes.

Where it starts: 23 Splitting Apart

A structure being stripped away from below: not a time to act, a time to endure and to give. Earth below, mountain above: a mountain resting on earth that is eroding beneath it. Five yin lines rise beneath one yang line at the top; the structure is collapsing from the bottom. Splitting Apart describes a time of decline in which the inferior is in the ascendant and the worthy have no leverage. The tradition's judgement is plain: it does not further to go anywhere. The image adds the remedy: those above secure their position by generosity to those below. The reading is not a catastrophe; it is a season, and the last line promises that the seed survives it.

Where it goes: 20 Contemplation

Looking and being looked at: a moment for seeing the whole clearly before anything is done. Earth below, wind above: wind moving across the land, reaching everywhere. The Chinese character means both to observe and to be observed, and the hexagram holds both: a tower from which the whole country can be seen, and a tower that the whole country can see. Contemplation describes a pause for perspective. The tradition's image is of the moment in a ritual after the purification and before the offering, when sincerity is at its highest and nothing has yet been done. The reading asks you to look, honestly, at the whole situation and at yourself, and to understand that you are also being watched.

The lines that move

  1. Line 5

A shoal of fishes. Favour comes through the court ladies. Nothing that does not further.

The turn: the inferior elements, led by one of their own, submit to the one strong line and are brought into order. Destruction becomes cooperation. The line is entirely favourable. The tide turns when its leader submits to what is sound; welcome it.

What is changing. The situation of Splitting Apart is moving toward Contemplation. Do not advance; endure, be generous downward, and protect the seed for the next season. As the change completes: Take the wide view, examine yourself honestly, and act only once you have seen the whole.

love and relationships
Now: Something is coming apart and pushing against it now accelerates the collapse. Do not act; endure with grace. Generosity, not argument, is the only thing that holds anything together in this season. What is sound survives it. Then: Step back and look at the whole relationship rather than the last argument. See the pattern. The reading also reminds you that how you behave is being observed and forms the other person's view of you.
career
Now: The structure around you is being undermined and the wrong people have the momentum. This is not the time for initiatives or confrontation. Keep your integrity, support the people beneath you, and wait for the cycle to complete. Then: A time for assessment rather than action: survey the whole field, understand the people, and set an example by how you conduct the survey. Others are watching how you look at them.
money
Now: Decline, and no good moment to reverse it by action. Protect what you can, avoid new commitments, and be generous where generosity secures loyalty. The uneaten fruit at the top is what you carry into the next cycle. Then: Review before you act. Look at the whole financial picture with honesty, including the parts you have been avoiding. Decisions made from this overview are sounder than any made in the moment.
decisions
Now: Do not decide to move; decide to hold. The reading rules out advancing. The only active choice it supports is generosity toward those who depend on you. Then: Do not decide yet; see. Take the widest view available, examine your own motives, and let the decision follow from clarity. The pause is not avoidance; it is the offering before the act.
