I Ching · Hexagram 23 Splitting Apart
Hexagram 23 line 4: Splitting Apart, yin in the fourth place

I Ching 23.4
The bed is split up to the skin. Misfortune.
The collapse reaches the person themselves. No warning helps now; the damage is direct and must be endured. The line does not soften it.
Advice. The damage is here; endure it without pretending otherwise.
What changes when line 4 moves
Line 4 of Hexagram 23 is yin, a broken line. When it is cast as old yin (a 6) it flips, and the hexagram becomes Hexagram 35, Progress: The sun rising over the earth: rapid, easy progress, and a leader who is rewarded and received three times a day.
Read together, the reading moves from Splitting Apart toward Progress. A structure being stripped away from below: not a time to act, a time to endure and to give. Earth below, fire above: the sun climbing above the land, light spreading. Progress is the hexagram of advance that meets no serious resistance, of the capable person recognised by an enlightened superior. The primary hexagram describes the situation; the changing line is the point of movement in it; the resulting hexagram is where that movement leads. Both hexagrams belong to the reading, and the changing line is the hinge between them.
Line 4 in context
- Love & relationships
- The damage is here; endure it without pretending otherwise. In love and relationships, Hexagram 23 reads: Something is coming apart and pushing against it now accelerates the collapse. Do not act; endure with grace. Generosity, not argument, is the only thing that holds anything together in this season. What is sound survives it.
- Career
- The damage is here; endure it without pretending otherwise. In career, Hexagram 23 reads: The structure around you is being undermined and the wrong people have the momentum. This is not the time for initiatives or confrontation. Keep your integrity, support the people beneath you, and wait for the cycle to complete.
- Money
- The damage is here; endure it without pretending otherwise. In money, Hexagram 23 reads: Decline, and no good moment to reverse it by action. Protect what you can, avoid new commitments, and be generous where generosity secures loyalty. The uneaten fruit at the top is what you carry into the next cycle.
- A decision
- The damage is here; endure it without pretending otherwise. In decisions, Hexagram 23 reads: Do not decide to move; decide to hold. The reading rules out advancing. The only active choice it supports is generosity toward those who depend on you.
