Hexagram 24 changing to 36: Return to Darkening of the Light

Line 3 changes.

Where it starts: 24 Return

The turning point: light returns after the darkest day, and the beginning must be treated gently. Thunder below, earth above: movement stirring under the ground at the winter solstice. One yang line has entered at the bottom beneath five yin lines. Return is the turning point, the first day of the light's recovery, and the tradition treats it with great tenderness: the ancient kings closed the passes at the solstice and let everything rest. The reading says the turn has come, that the old cycle is over and a new one is beginning, and that the beginning is small and must not be forced. Friends come without blame; going and coming is without error; the way returns in seven days.

Where it goes: 36 Darkening of the Light

The light gone into the earth: a time of adversity survived by hiding one's brightness while keeping it. Fire below, earth above: the sun sunk beneath the ground. Darkening of the Light describes a time when a bad situation or a bad leader makes it dangerous to be seen clearly, and the tradition's counsel is to veil one's light without extinguishing it. The judgement says that in adversity it furthers to be persistent. The image is precise: the wise person deals with the crowd by veiling their light, and yet shines. The reading is a survival strategy for a dark period: keep your inner clarity, do not display it where it will be attacked, and endure. The tradition's model is a prince who feigned madness to survive a tyrant.

The lines that move

  1. Line 3

    Repeated return. Danger. No blame.

Turning back again and again, never quite holding the course: an unstable person who keeps recovering. The line finds it dangerous and does not condemn it, because each return is real even if it does not last. Keep returning even if you keep slipping; the returns count.

What is changing. The situation of Return is moving toward Darkening of the Light. Welcome the turn, begin small, and rest while the new cycle gathers strength. As the change completes: Veil your light without putting it out; keep your inner clarity and outlast the dark.

love and relationships
Now: A return: of warmth, of contact, of someone, or of your own feeling. It is real and it is young. Do not test it with demands. Let the new beginning grow at its own pace and rest with it. Then: A dark stretch, possibly with someone whose behaviour makes honesty dangerous. Keep your inner clarity and do not lay it out where it will be used against you. Endure with your integrity hidden but intact, and watch for the time to leave or the light to return.
career
Now: The low point has passed and a new cycle is beginning. Do not launch everything at once. Take the first small step, let the momentum build naturally, and rest while it does. The tradition closes the passes for a reason. Then: A hostile environment or a bad leader. Do not shine where shining draws fire. Keep your competence, do your work quietly, avoid being conspicuous, and outlast the period. The reading is about survival with integrity, not about winning.
money
Now: Recovery begins, small at first. Do not rush to make up losses; the return to strength follows its own timing. Reinvest gently and let the cycle carry you. Then: Conceal your position. This is not a time to be seen as prosperous or to make visible moves. Protect what you have quietly and persist through the dark stretch.
decisions
Now: Decide for the fresh start, and decide to make it gently. The reading favours returning to your own proper path over any dramatic new direction. Small first, and in season. Then: Choose the option that keeps you safe and intact through a difficult time, not the one that asserts you. If leaving is possible, the lines support it; if not, the strategy is concealment and endurance.
