Hexagram 24 changing to 51: Return to The Arousing

Line 4 changes.

Where it starts: 24 Return

The turning point: light returns after the darkest day, and the beginning must be treated gently. Thunder below, earth above: movement stirring under the ground at the winter solstice. One yang line has entered at the bottom beneath five yin lines. Return is the turning point, the first day of the light's recovery, and the tradition treats it with great tenderness: the ancient kings closed the passes at the solstice and let everything rest. The reading says the turn has come, that the old cycle is over and a new one is beginning, and that the beginning is small and must not be forced. Friends come without blame; going and coming is without error; the way returns in seven days.

Where it goes: 51 The Arousing

Thunder repeated: a shock that terrifies for a hundred miles, and the composure not to drop the ladle. Thunder below, thunder above: the arousing doubled, shock upon shock. The Arousing describes the sudden event that shakes everything: a crisis, a loss, an upheaval, a fright. The tradition's judgement is famous: the shock comes, oh, oh; laughter, ha, ha. The thunder terrifies for a hundred miles, and the person who does not let the sacrificial spoon and cup fall is the one the hexagram admires. The image adds the response: in fear and trembling, the wise person sets their life in order and examines themselves. The reading says a shock has come or is coming, that it will be frightening, and that the whole test is composure: to be shaken and not to drop what you are holding.

The lines that move

  1. Line 4

Walking in the midst of others, one returns alone.

Surrounded by people going the wrong way, and choosing to turn back alone. There is no promise of reward in the line, only the correctness of the choice. Sometimes the return is solitary. Turn back even if no one comes with you.

What is changing. The situation of Return is moving toward The Arousing. Welcome the turn, begin small, and rest while the new cycle gathers strength. As the change completes: Hold your composure through the shock, and let the fear become the review that sets things in order.

love and relationships
Now: A return: of warmth, of contact, of someone, or of your own feeling. It is real and it is young. Do not test it with demands. Let the new beginning grow at its own pace and rest with it. Then: A shock in the relationship: a revelation, a loss, a sudden fright. The reading does not minimise it. It asks you not to drop what you hold: keep your composure, do not act from the first terror, and let the fright become the examination that puts things in order.
career
Now: The low point has passed and a new cycle is beginning. Do not launch everything at once. Take the first small step, let the momentum build naturally, and rest while it does. The tradition closes the passes for a reason. Then: Sudden upheaval: a change of leadership, a crisis, a jolt. The people who come through are the ones who keep their heads while the thunder rolls. Do not make big decisions in the first shock; use it to review everything.
money
Now: Recovery begins, small at first. Do not rush to make up losses; the return to strength follows its own timing. Reinvest gently and let the cycle carry you. Then: A financial shock. The reading's counsel is composure: do not sell in terror, do not act in the roll of the thunder. Examine what the shock reveals about your arrangements and set them in order.
decisions
Now: Decide for the fresh start, and decide to make it gently. The reading favours returning to your own proper path over any dramatic new direction. Small first, and in season. Then: Do not decide inside the shock. Let the thunder pass, hold what you are holding, and decide once the fear has become examination. The reading's laughter comes after the fright, not during it.
