I Ching · Hexagram 27 Nourishment

Hexagram 27 line 6: Nourishment, yang in the sixth place

Line 6 of a hexagram

I Ching 27.6

The source of nourishment. Awareness of danger brings good fortune. It furthers to cross the great water.

The one everyone is fed by, who carries great responsibility and knows it. The awareness of that weight is what keeps the line fortunate. With it, even the large undertaking is right.

Advice. You are the source; carry it with awareness and you can undertake great things.

What changes when line 6 moves

Line 6 of Hexagram 27 is yang, a solid line. When it is cast as old yang (a 9) it flips, and the hexagram becomes Hexagram 24, Return: The turning point: light returns after the darkest day, and the beginning must be treated gently.

Read together, the reading moves from Nourishment toward Return. What you feed, and what feeds you: attention to nourishment, of the body, the mind and others. Thunder below, earth above: movement stirring under the ground at the winter solstice. One yang line has entered at the bottom beneath five yin lines. The primary hexagram describes the situation; the changing line is the point of movement in it; the resulting hexagram is where that movement leads. Both hexagrams belong to the reading, and the changing line is the hinge between them.

A decision
You are the source; carry it with awareness and you can undertake great things. In decisions, Hexagram 27 reads: Decide by asking what the option will nourish. The choice that feeds something worthwhile, in you or in others, is the right one; the one that only fills the mouth is not.
