Hexagram 28 changing to 43: Great Excess to Breakthrough
Line 1 changes.
Where it starts: 28 Great Excess
A ridgepole bending under too much weight: an extraordinary situation that demands extraordinary, careful action. Wind below, lake above: the lake rising over the trees. Four strong lines in the middle, two weak at the ends: a beam too heavy for its supports. Great Excess describes a critical moment, a load that the structure cannot carry, a situation that has gone past what ordinary measures can handle. The tradition's judgement is not despair: it furthers to have somewhere to go, and success is possible. But the action required is exceptional, and it must be taken with the calm of someone who can stand alone and withdraw from the world without regret. The reading says the pressure is real and the way through is decisive and unconventional.
Where it goes: 43 Breakthrough
Five strong lines against one weak one at the top: the decisive, open resolution of a last remaining wrong. Heaven below, lake above: a lake risen to the sky, about to burst. Breakthrough describes the moment when what has been building must break: a resolute declaration against a last inferior element, made openly and in the right way. The tradition's judgement is detailed. The matter must be declared publicly and truthfully; there is danger; one must notify one's own city and not resort to arms; it furthers to have somewhere to go. The image warns against hoarding the gains. The reading says the time for resolution has come, that it should be done in the open, by declaration rather than force, and that the last remnant of the old must not be underestimated.
The lines that move
Spreading white rushes underneath. No blame.
Extreme care at the start of an extraordinary undertaking: placing the offering on rushes rather than the bare ground. In a critical time, an excess of caution is correct, not fussy. Take more care than seems necessary; the situation warrants it.
What is changing. The situation of Great Excess is moving toward Breakthrough. Recognise the critical moment and act decisively and calmly, even if the action is unusual. As the change completes: Resolve the matter openly and truthfully, by declaration not force, and share what it frees.
- love and relationships
- Now: The relationship is under more weight than it was built for. Ordinary adjustments will not do. Either a decisive change, made carefully, or a decisive acceptance of what cannot be held. Do not pretend the beam is not bending. Then: Something must be said plainly and finally. Say it openly and without violence, and expect it to be dangerous. The reading favours the clear declaration over both silence and force, and warns against being too sure of the outcome.
- career
- Now: A crisis, an overload, a structure at breaking point. The reading supports extraordinary action: the unusual solution, the difficult conversation, the change of direction. Act before the ridgepole snaps, and act calmly. Then: A decisive break with a last remaining problem, a person or a practice. Declare it in the open, through proper means, and do not underestimate the resistance. Share the gains of the resolution rather than keeping them.
- money
- Now: Overextension. The commitments exceed the support. Reduce the load or reinforce the structure now; waiting is the one thing the reading forbids. Exceptional measures are appropriate. Then: The moment to resolve a lingering financial wrong, decisively and transparently. Not the moment to hoard the results. Distribute what the breakthrough frees.
- decisions
- Now: This is a decision that cannot be avoided or postponed. Choose the extraordinary option that addresses the actual load, and choose it with composure rather than panic. Then: Decide, and decide openly. The reading supports the resolute option provided it is declared rather than forced, and it says to keep a destination in view. Half-measures now leave the last remnant to grow back.
