Hexagram 33 changing to 53: Retreat to Development
Line 4 changes.
Where it starts: 33 Retreat
A timely, dignified withdrawal: strength stepping back before it is forced to, with its integrity intact. Mountain below, heaven above: heaven receding from the mountain. Two yin lines are entering at the bottom and rising; the strong lines above withdraw in good order. Retreat is not flight. The tradition's judgement is that retreat succeeds, and that persistence in small things furthers. The reading describes a situation in which the lesser is gaining ground and the right response is not to fight it head-on but to withdraw with dignity, keeping one's distance and one's standards, and giving no ground in the small things that define who you are. Timing is everything: the retreat done early is a strategy; done late, it is a rout.
Where it goes: 53 Development
The wild goose flying stage by stage to its home: gradual, orderly progress that cannot be hurried. Mountain below, wind above: a tree on a mountain, growing slowly, visible from far away. Development describes progress that must be gradual, and the tradition's image is the wild goose migrating in stages: the shore, the cliff, the plateau, the tree, the summit, the cloud heights. The judgement is that the maiden is given in marriage, good fortune, persistence furthers, meaning that the process is like a proper courtship: it has stages, and each must be completed. The reading says the goal is reachable and the way to it is orderly patience. Skipping a stage does not shorten the journey; it ends it.
The lines that move
Voluntary retreat brings good fortune to the superior person and downfall to the inferior.
Withdrawing by choice, with the composure to let go of what one leaves behind. The worthy person can do this; the petty cannot, and cling, and fall. The line marks the difference between retreat as strategy and retreat as loss. Retreat by choice and let go cleanly.
What is changing. The situation of Retreat is moving toward Development. Withdraw early, calmly and with reserve; hold your standards in the small things. As the change completes: Advance in order, stage by stage, and complete each one before the next.
- love and relationships
- Now: Step back. Not a break, a withdrawal from a dynamic that is not serving you, done calmly and without anger. Keep your dignity and your small standards. Distance now may be what preserves the relationship later. Then: The reading for a relationship developing properly, with its stages honoured: acquaintance, courtship, commitment, home. Do not rush a stage and do not skip one. The goose reaches the summit by landing on every ledge on the way.
- career
- Now: The environment is turning against you and confrontation would lose. Withdraw strategically: reduce exposure, keep your work impeccable in small things, and do not engage the people who are gaining ground. Retreat early and it is a choice. Then: Steady, staged advancement: the apprenticeship, the first responsibility, the recognition, the seniority. Each stage prepares the next. The reading warns against grabbing at a position two stages ahead; the goose that flies straight to the cloud heights has nowhere to land.
- money
- Now: Reduce exposure. Pull back from positions that are going wrong while you still can do it on your own terms. Persistence in small, careful matters is favoured; large moves are not. Then: Gradual building. The reading supports the patient, staged plan and is against the leap. Each level of security is the foundation for the next; establish it before reaching higher.
- decisions
- Now: Choose the option that lets you step back in good order. The reading is against fighting the rising tide and equally against retreating so late that it becomes a collapse. Withdraw while it is still a decision. Then: Choose the option that takes the next step, not the final one. The reading favours the sequence: what is the stage you are at, and what does it prepare? Decide for that.
