Hexagram 34 changing to 54: Great Power to The Marrying Maiden
Line 3 changes.
Where it starts: 34 Great Power
Strength in the ascendant: thunder in heaven, and the discipline to use power only in what is right. Heaven below, thunder above: four strong lines rising, two yielding lines retreating above them. Great Power describes a time when strength is with you and growing, and the tradition's whole concern is what you do with it. The judgement is short: persistence furthers. The image adds the rule: the wise person does not tread paths that do not accord with the established order. Power is legitimate when it is used within what is right, and the lines are full of goats butting hedges and getting stuck. The reading says you have the strength; the question is whether you have the restraint that turns strength into power.
Where it goes: 54 The Marrying Maiden
Entering a relationship on unequal terms: a position with little standing, held well by tact and by knowing its limits. Lake below, thunder above: the young daughter following the eldest son, joy in the wake of movement. The Marrying Maiden describes a relationship or a role entered from a position of weakness: the secondary partner, the junior, the one who joins an arrangement already formed. The tradition's judgement is unusually stark: undertakings bring misfortune, nothing that furthers. This is not a condemnation of the person. It says that a position with no standing cannot be used to push, and that the way to hold it is with tact, patience and an understanding of what will and will not last. The reading asks you to see the terms of the arrangement clearly before you act within it.
The lines that move
The inferior person uses power; the superior person does not. Persistence is dangerous. A goat butts a hedge and entangles its horns.
The line's famous goat. The petty person shows off strength and gets stuck; the wise person, equally strong, does not display it. The tradition's advice is not to boast of power even when it is real. Do not flaunt your strength; the display is what traps you.
What is changing. The situation of Great Power is moving toward The Marrying Maiden. Use your strength firmly and only within what is right; restraint is what makes it power. As the change completes: See the terms of the arrangement as they are, hold your position with tact, and understand what will not last.
- love and relationships
- Now: You have the upper hand or the stronger feeling, and the reading asks you not to use it to push. Strength in a relationship is shown by what it declines to do. Butting the hedge gets the horns stuck. Then: A relationship on unequal terms, or one entered without the standing you would want. The reading does not say leave, and it does not say push. It says understand exactly what the position is, hold it with dignity and tact, and do not mistake it for something it is not.
- career
- Now: Momentum and capability are high. Use them within the rules and the proper channels; the reading favours legitimate advance and warns sharply against forcing through obstacles by sheer force. What is right, done firmly, wins. Then: A junior or secondary role, joined late, with little leverage. The reading is against initiatives from this position and in favour of doing the role well, with tact, while understanding its limits. The lines describe both the people who thrive in it and those who overreach.
- money
- Now: Strong position, growing resources. The discipline is to keep to sound methods rather than to use the strength for an aggressive play. Power that stays within order compounds; power that charges the fence loses. Then: An arrangement in which you are the weaker party. Do not push for more than the terms allow. Understand the transitory nature of the deal and do not build permanent plans on it.
- decisions
- Now: Decide firmly, and choose the option that is both strong and correct. If the strong option requires breaking a rule or forcing someone, the reading says it will stall. Persist within the right. Then: The reading warns against undertakings. If you must decide, choose the option that keeps your dignity inside the unequal arrangement, and understand its temporary nature before you commit anything lasting to it.
