Hexagram 36 line 1: Darkening of the Light, yang in the first place
I Ching 36.1
Darkening of the light in flight; he lowers his wings. The superior person goes three days without food. Where he goes, people gossip.
Seeing the darkness coming and leaving early, at real cost and without understanding from others. The line honours the person who withdraws before being forced to, even though it looks like weakness and costs comfort.
Advice. Leave early, accept the hardship and the talk; it is the right time.
What changes when line 1 moves
Line 1 of Hexagram 36 is yang, a solid line. When it is cast as old yang (a 9) it flips, and the hexagram becomes Hexagram 15, Modesty: A mountain inside the earth: real substance carried without display, which the tradition rewards above almost everything.
Read together, the reading moves from Darkening of the Light toward Modesty. The light gone into the earth: a time of adversity survived by hiding one's brightness while keeping it. Mountain below, earth above: height held beneath the ground. Modesty is the only hexagram in the book in which every line is favourable, and it describes greatness that does not need to show itself.
