Hexagram 38 changing to 10: Opposition to Treading
Line 5 changes.
Where it starts: 38 Opposition
Fire and lake pulling apart: estrangement, and the small gains still possible when opposites understand their difference. Lake below, fire above: fire rises and water sinks, two sisters living together who cannot agree. Opposition describes divergence, misunderstanding, people at cross purposes. The tradition's judgement is modest: in small matters, good fortune. Nothing large can be done while the parties are pulling apart, but small things can, and the image offers the deeper point: the wise person retains individuality even among the like-minded. Difference is not the same as enmity. The reading says the estrangement is real, that it cannot be forced closed, and that the lines describe how misunderstandings dissolve when they are met with patience rather than suspicion.
Where it goes: 10 Treading
Careful conduct in a delicate situation: treading on the tiger's tail, and not being bitten. Lake below, heaven above: the gentle and cheerful beneath the strong. Treading is about conduct, about how to move through a situation where a wrong step has real consequences. The tradition's image is of stepping on a tiger's tail without being bitten, and the way that is achieved is with courtesy, care and good humour rather than with force or fear. The reading says you are close to something powerful or dangerous and that your behaviour, moment to moment, decides whether it turns on you. Correct manners, plainly kept, carry you through.
The lines that move
Remorse disappears. The companion bites through the wrappings. If one goes to him, how could it be a mistake?
A misunderstanding stripped away: the ally reveals themselves through the coverings that made them look otherwise, and the way to them is open. The line says to go; there is no error in it. The disguise has come off; go to your ally.
What is changing. The situation of Opposition is moving toward Treading. Accept the divergence, keep your own ground without hostility, and work on small things until understanding returns. As the change completes: Behave with care and courtesy, especially toward whatever is stronger than you.
- love and relationships
- Now: You are at cross purposes and the pull is apart. Do not force closeness. Work on small things, let misunderstandings clear, and accept that difference is not the end of a bond. The lines end with suspicion dissolving and a reunion. Then: A delicate situation with someone whose reaction you cannot predict. Tact matters more than truth-telling for its own sake. Be kind, be careful, and do not test the tiger to see if it bites.
- career
- Now: Colleagues or partners diverging, priorities in conflict. Large joint projects will not work now; small cooperative steps can. Keep your own position clear without hostility and let the misreadings correct themselves. Then: You are dealing with a powerful person or a dangerous situation. The reading favours impeccable conduct: polite, correct, unhurried, never presumptuous. Know your place in the order and act from it.
- money
- Now: Disagreement about money or direction. Keep the stakes small until alignment returns. Do not let the difference become suspicion; that is what the hexagram warns turns an opposition into a rupture. Then: Proceed with care in a situation where a misstep is costly. Read the terms. Do not provoke a stronger party. Modest, correct dealings get through where clever ones get bitten.
- decisions
- Now: Choose small, reversible steps rather than the big joint decision. The reading rules out large undertakings while the parties are opposed and supports modest progress on what can be agreed. Then: Choose the option that lets you move carefully and correctly. If the decision requires you to step on the tiger, do it with full attention and good manners, not bravado.
