Hexagram 47 changing to 40: Oppression to Deliverance

Line 5 changes.

Where it starts: 47 Oppression

A lake with no water: exhaustion, confinement, and the strength of character that carries a person through. Water below, lake above: the water has drained out of the lake, leaving it dry. Oppression describes exhaustion, the state of being hemmed in and drained, the tree in the enclosure. The tradition's judgement is remarkable for its confidence: success, persistence, the great person brings good fortune, no blame. And then: when one has something to say, it is not believed. The reading says the situation is oppressive and that the way through is not argument, which no one will hear, but character: the wise person stakes their life on following their will. What cannot be changed outside is met by what cannot be broken inside.

Where it goes: 40 Deliverance

The storm breaks and the tension releases: act quickly on what needs doing, forgive the rest, and return to normal. Water below, thunder above: a thunderstorm clearing the air, the tension of Obstruction discharged. Deliverance is the moment after difficulty, when the knot is untied. The tradition's judgement has two parts: if there is nowhere further to go, return brings good fortune; if there is somewhere to go, haste brings good fortune. Either finish the release quickly or go back to ordinary life; do not linger in the aftermath. The image adds forgiveness: the wise person pardons mistakes and forgives misdeeds. The reading says the crisis is passing, and the task now is to clear up promptly and not to prolong what has already been resolved.

The lines that move

  1. Line 5

Nose and feet cut off. Oppression at the hands of the man with the purple knee bands. Joy comes softly. It furthers to offer sacrifice.

Someone in a high position, oppressed from above and below, unable to act, and finding relief slowly through inner composure rather than outer change. The line asks for sacrifice, meaning the surrender of what one cannot control. You cannot act; compose yourself inwardly and relief comes softly.

What is changing. The situation of Oppression is moving toward Deliverance. Do not argue when you will not be believed; hold your will and your character, and endure. As the change completes: Act promptly on what the release allows, forgive the rest, and return to ordinary life.

love and relationships
Now: A drained, hemmed-in stretch, and a time when explaining yourself does not work because words are not believed. Do not argue. Hold your integrity and wait. The lines say oppression is survived by what a person is, not by what they say. Then: The tension has broken. Do what remains quickly and forgive what can be forgiven. Do not keep the argument alive after it is over. The reading favours a prompt return to ordinary warmth.
career
Now: Exhaustion and confinement: blocked, unheard, worn down. The reading advises against making your case now; it will not be heard. Keep your standards, conserve your strength, and let your conduct speak until words can again. Then: The blockage has cleared. Act fast on the things that the clearing makes possible, then let the matter rest. Pardon errors made under pressure. Lingering over the crisis is the one thing that would restart it.
money
Now: Resources drained, options narrow. Endure without panic, avoid desperate moves, and do not try to talk your way out; act quietly and correctly. The tradition promises that the person of character comes through. Then: Relief from a financial strain. Settle what needs settling quickly and return to normal management. Do not make dramatic moves in the euphoria of release.
decisions
Now: Not a time to decide anything large, and not a time to persuade. Choose the option that costs least and preserves your integrity, and wait for the water to return. Then: If there is something to do, do it promptly; if not, return to ordinary life. The reading is against dwelling. Choose the option that closes the matter cleanly and forgives what it can.
