Hexagram 47 changing to 6: Oppression to Conflict

Line 6 changes.

Where it starts: 47 Oppression

A lake with no water: exhaustion, confinement, and the strength of character that carries a person through. Water below, lake above: the water has drained out of the lake, leaving it dry. Oppression describes exhaustion, the state of being hemmed in and drained, the tree in the enclosure. The tradition's judgement is remarkable for its confidence: success, persistence, the great person brings good fortune, no blame. And then: when one has something to say, it is not believed. The reading says the situation is oppressive and that the way through is not argument, which no one will hear, but character: the wise person stakes their life on following their will. What cannot be changed outside is met by what cannot be broken inside.

Where it goes: 6 Conflict

A dispute you are sincere in but cannot win outright: meet halfway, and take advice before going further. Water below, heaven above: the two move in opposite directions and cannot meet. Conflict describes a disagreement that has hardened, where you may be in the right and still cannot carry it through by force. The tradition is specific: sincerity matters, obstruction is real, stopping halfway brings good fortune and pushing to the end brings misfortune. It recommends seeing the great person, meaning someone impartial who can arbitrate, and it says plainly that this is not the time to cross the great water, not the time for large undertakings.

The lines that move

  1. Line 6

Oppressed by creeping vines. Moving uncertainly and saying that movement brings remorse. If one feels remorse over this and makes a start, good fortune comes.

Bound by something that could be broken, and held only by the belief that breaking it would be a mistake. The line's release is a change of mind: regret for the hesitation, and then a start. The vines are weaker than they feel. The bonds are weaker than they seem; regret the hesitation and move.

What is changing. The situation of Oppression is moving toward Conflict. Do not argue when you will not be believed; hold your will and your character, and endure. As the change completes: Stop the dispute halfway, seek an impartial view, and start nothing large until it is settled.

love and relationships
Now: A drained, hemmed-in stretch, and a time when explaining yourself does not work because words are not believed. Do not argue. Hold your integrity and wait. The lines say oppression is survived by what a person is, not by what they say. Then: An argument in which both of you feel right. Winning it is not available. The reading asks you to stop before the point of no return, to bring in a fair outside view if you need one, and to look at how the disagreement began.
career
Now: Exhaustion and confinement: blocked, unheard, worn down. The reading advises against making your case now; it will not be heard. Keep your standards, conserve your strength, and let your conduct speak until words can again. Then: A conflict with a colleague, client or employer. Do not escalate to the end. Document your position, stay sincere, seek a neutral arbiter, and settle at the halfway point where you can.
money
Now: Resources drained, options narrow. Endure without panic, avoid desperate moves, and do not try to talk your way out; act quietly and correctly. The tradition promises that the person of character comes through. Then: A dispute over money, or a deal going sour. The reading warns against litigation to the finish and against new ventures while the dispute is open. Settle if you can; do not expand while you fight.
decisions
Now: Not a time to decide anything large, and not a time to persuade. Choose the option that costs least and preserves your integrity, and wait for the water to return. Then: Do not decide in the heat of the conflict, and do not commit to anything large while it runs. The choice that lets you stop halfway with dignity is the better one.
