Hexagram 52 changing to 15: Keeping Still to Modesty
Line 6 changes.
Where it starts: 52 Keeping Still
The mountain doubled: stillness so complete that one keeps the back still and does not feel the body. Mountain below, mountain above: stillness upon stillness. Keeping Still is the hexagram of rest, of the pause between movements, of the mind that has stopped chasing itself. The tradition's judgement is an image of meditation: keeping the back still so that the body is no longer felt, going into the courtyard and not seeing the people there, without blame. Stillness of this kind is not withdrawal from life; the image says the wise person does not let their thoughts go beyond the situation. The reading says the moment asks for stopping, for full attention to what is here, and for restraint of the impulse to move. Every line is a part of the body coming to rest.
Where it goes: 15 Modesty
A mountain inside the earth: real substance carried without display, which the tradition rewards above almost everything. Mountain below, earth above: height held beneath the ground. Modesty is the only hexagram in the book in which every line is favourable, and it describes greatness that does not need to show itself. The tradition's judgement is simple: modesty creates success, and the wise person carries things through. The reading is about levelling, reducing what is too much and adding to what is too little, in oneself and in the situation. It does not mean self-abasement. The mountain is still there; it is simply not making a point of itself.
The lines that move
Noble-hearted keeping still. Good fortune.
Stillness that has become the person's nature, at the top of the mountain, complete and untroubled. The line is the hexagram fulfilled: rest that is not effort, presence that is not strain. Good fortune. Rest completely; the stillness is yours now.
What is changing. The situation of Keeping Still is moving toward Modesty. Stop; keep the mind within the present situation and let the body rest. As the change completes: Reduce what is excessive, add to what is lacking, and let substance speak for itself.
- love and relationships
- Now: Be still. Do not act, do not push, do not run thoughts ahead to what might happen. The reading favours calm presence over any gesture. Some of the lines describe stillness forced on someone too early; the whole describes stillness chosen, which is what is asked here. Then: Let your actions speak and your claims stay quiet. The reading favours the partner who does the work without needing it noticed. Balance is the theme: give more where you have given little, ask less where you have asked much.
- career
- Now: A pause. Stop, attend to what is in front of you, and do not let the mind race to the next thing. Not the time for initiatives. The reading is favourable for reflection, planning done quietly, and the restraint of ambition for a season. Then: Competence without self-promotion, which in this reading is rewarded rather than overlooked. Do the substantial thing and let it be seen in its own time. Level the team's imbalances rather than standing above them.
- money
- Now: Hold. No new positions, no reactions, no plans running ahead of the facts. The reading is for stillness, and stillness with money means doing nothing until there is a real reason to move. Then: Moderation. Reduce excess, cover the shortfalls, avoid display. Wealth handled modestly grows quietly; wealth flaunted draws the attention that costs it.
- decisions
- Now: Do not decide; stop. The reading is explicit that thought should not go beyond the situation, which means the decision cannot be made until the situation itself changes. Wait in full attention. Then: Choose the option that balances rather than the one that impresses. Where you have too much of something, give some up; where too little, add. The modest choice is the one that carries through.
