Hexagram 52 changing to 22: Keeping Still to Grace

Line 1 changes.

Where it starts: 52 Keeping Still

The mountain doubled: stillness so complete that one keeps the back still and does not feel the body. Mountain below, mountain above: stillness upon stillness. Keeping Still is the hexagram of rest, of the pause between movements, of the mind that has stopped chasing itself. The tradition's judgement is an image of meditation: keeping the back still so that the body is no longer felt, going into the courtyard and not seeing the people there, without blame. Stillness of this kind is not withdrawal from life; the image says the wise person does not let their thoughts go beyond the situation. The reading says the moment asks for stopping, for full attention to what is here, and for restraint of the impulse to move. Every line is a part of the body coming to rest.

Where it goes: 22 Grace

Form and beauty in their proper place: adornment that serves substance, and knows its limits. Fire below, mountain above: fire lighting the mountain from beneath, making it beautiful. Grace is about form: manners, presentation, art, the way things look and are arranged. The tradition's judgement is favourable in small matters, and the qualification is the whole point. Beauty of form is right and good and it is not the same as substance. The reading says the situation calls for care in how things are presented, that this care is worth taking, and that it must not be mistaken for the thing itself. Grace clarifies small matters; it does not decide great ones.

The lines that move

  1. Line 1

Keeping the toes still. No blame. Continued persistence furthers.

Stopping before the first step, at the moment before movement begins. The easiest stillness and the wisest. The line asks for continued steadiness in it. Stop before you start; it is the easiest place to stop.

What is changing. The situation of Keeping Still is moving toward Grace. Stop; keep the mind within the present situation and let the body rest. As the change completes: Give form its due care, keep it in proportion, and decide large matters on substance.

love and relationships
Now: Be still. Do not act, do not push, do not run thoughts ahead to what might happen. The reading favours calm presence over any gesture. Some of the lines describe stillness forced on someone too early; the whole describes stillness chosen, which is what is asked here. Then: Attention to how things are done: courtesy, gesture, the setting. It matters and it is enjoyable. The reading warns against mistaking the surface for the bond, and its last line points at plain, unadorned sincerity as the highest grace.
career
Now: A pause. Stop, attend to what is in front of you, and do not let the mind race to the next thing. Not the time for initiatives. The reading is favourable for reflection, planning done quietly, and the restraint of ambition for a season. Then: Presentation counts: how you frame the proposal, how the work looks, the manners of the negotiation. Take the care. Do not let polish stand in for content, and do not make a large decision on the strength of appearances.
money
Now: Hold. No new positions, no reactions, no plans running ahead of the facts. The reading is for stillness, and stillness with money means doing nothing until there is a real reason to move. Then: Good for matters of style, display and small refinement; poor for major financial decisions, which should not be made on how something is presented. Look past the packaging.
decisions
Now: Do not decide; stop. The reading is explicit that thought should not go beyond the situation, which means the decision cannot be made until the situation itself changes. Wait in full attention. Then: Fine for small choices of form and manner. For a large decision, strip away the presentation and decide on substance. The reading explicitly does not support deciding great matters by appearances.
