Hexagram 52 changing to 23: Keeping Still to Splitting Apart

Line 3 changes.

Where it starts: 52 Keeping Still

The mountain doubled: stillness so complete that one keeps the back still and does not feel the body. Mountain below, mountain above: stillness upon stillness. Keeping Still is the hexagram of rest, of the pause between movements, of the mind that has stopped chasing itself. The tradition's judgement is an image of meditation: keeping the back still so that the body is no longer felt, going into the courtyard and not seeing the people there, without blame. Stillness of this kind is not withdrawal from life; the image says the wise person does not let their thoughts go beyond the situation. The reading says the moment asks for stopping, for full attention to what is here, and for restraint of the impulse to move. Every line is a part of the body coming to rest.

Where it goes: 23 Splitting Apart

A structure being stripped away from below: not a time to act, a time to endure and to give. Earth below, mountain above: a mountain resting on earth that is eroding beneath it. Five yin lines rise beneath one yang line at the top; the structure is collapsing from the bottom. Splitting Apart describes a time of decline in which the inferior is in the ascendant and the worthy have no leverage. The tradition's judgement is plain: it does not further to go anywhere. The image adds the remedy: those above secure their position by generosity to those below. The reading is not a catastrophe; it is a season, and the last line promises that the seed survives it.

The lines that move

  1. Line 3

Keeping the hips still. Making the sacrum stiff. Dangerous; the heart suffocates.

Stillness forced violently on a body that is not ready, rigidity mistaken for calm. The result is not peace but suffocation. The line warns against imposing stillness by force, on oneself or on others. Do not force the stillness; rigidity is not rest.

What is changing. The situation of Keeping Still is moving toward Splitting Apart. Stop; keep the mind within the present situation and let the body rest. As the change completes: Do not advance; endure, be generous downward, and protect the seed for the next season.

love and relationships
Now: Be still. Do not act, do not push, do not run thoughts ahead to what might happen. The reading favours calm presence over any gesture. Some of the lines describe stillness forced on someone too early; the whole describes stillness chosen, which is what is asked here. Then: Something is coming apart and pushing against it now accelerates the collapse. Do not act; endure with grace. Generosity, not argument, is the only thing that holds anything together in this season. What is sound survives it.
career
Now: A pause. Stop, attend to what is in front of you, and do not let the mind race to the next thing. Not the time for initiatives. The reading is favourable for reflection, planning done quietly, and the restraint of ambition for a season. Then: The structure around you is being undermined and the wrong people have the momentum. This is not the time for initiatives or confrontation. Keep your integrity, support the people beneath you, and wait for the cycle to complete.
money
Now: Hold. No new positions, no reactions, no plans running ahead of the facts. The reading is for stillness, and stillness with money means doing nothing until there is a real reason to move. Then: Decline, and no good moment to reverse it by action. Protect what you can, avoid new commitments, and be generous where generosity secures loyalty. The uneaten fruit at the top is what you carry into the next cycle.
decisions
Now: Do not decide; stop. The reading is explicit that thought should not go beyond the situation, which means the decision cannot be made until the situation itself changes. Wait in full attention. Then: Do not decide to move; decide to hold. The reading rules out advancing. The only active choice it supports is generosity toward those who depend on you.
