Hexagram 53 changing to 52: Development to Keeping Still
Line 5 changes.
Where it starts: 53 Development
The wild goose flying stage by stage to its home: gradual, orderly progress that cannot be hurried. Mountain below, wind above: a tree on a mountain, growing slowly, visible from far away. Development describes progress that must be gradual, and the tradition's image is the wild goose migrating in stages: the shore, the cliff, the plateau, the tree, the summit, the cloud heights. The judgement is that the maiden is given in marriage, good fortune, persistence furthers, meaning that the process is like a proper courtship: it has stages, and each must be completed. The reading says the goal is reachable and the way to it is orderly patience. Skipping a stage does not shorten the journey; it ends it.
Where it goes: 52 Keeping Still
The mountain doubled: stillness so complete that one keeps the back still and does not feel the body. Mountain below, mountain above: stillness upon stillness. Keeping Still is the hexagram of rest, of the pause between movements, of the mind that has stopped chasing itself. The tradition's judgement is an image of meditation: keeping the back still so that the body is no longer felt, going into the courtyard and not seeing the people there, without blame. Stillness of this kind is not withdrawal from life; the image says the wise person does not let their thoughts go beyond the situation. The reading says the moment asks for stopping, for full attention to what is here, and for restraint of the impulse to move. Every line is a part of the body coming to rest.
The lines that move
The wild goose gradually draws near the summit. For three years the woman has no child. In the end nothing can hinder her. Good fortune.
The high stage reached, and a long delay before it bears fruit, because of misunderstanding or isolation. The line promises that the delay ends: what is right at the summit cannot be hindered forever. You have reached the height; the fruit is delayed, not denied.
What is changing. The situation of Development is moving toward Keeping Still. Advance in order, stage by stage, and complete each one before the next. As the change completes: Stop; keep the mind within the present situation and let the body rest.
- love and relationships
- Now: The reading for a relationship developing properly, with its stages honoured: acquaintance, courtship, commitment, home. Do not rush a stage and do not skip one. The goose reaches the summit by landing on every ledge on the way. Then: Be still. Do not act, do not push, do not run thoughts ahead to what might happen. The reading favours calm presence over any gesture. Some of the lines describe stillness forced on someone too early; the whole describes stillness chosen, which is what is asked here.
- career
- Now: Steady, staged advancement: the apprenticeship, the first responsibility, the recognition, the seniority. Each stage prepares the next. The reading warns against grabbing at a position two stages ahead; the goose that flies straight to the cloud heights has nowhere to land. Then: A pause. Stop, attend to what is in front of you, and do not let the mind race to the next thing. Not the time for initiatives. The reading is favourable for reflection, planning done quietly, and the restraint of ambition for a season.
- money
- Now: Gradual building. The reading supports the patient, staged plan and is against the leap. Each level of security is the foundation for the next; establish it before reaching higher. Then: Hold. No new positions, no reactions, no plans running ahead of the facts. The reading is for stillness, and stillness with money means doing nothing until there is a real reason to move.
- decisions
- Now: Choose the option that takes the next step, not the final one. The reading favours the sequence: what is the stage you are at, and what does it prepare? Decide for that. Then: Do not decide; stop. The reading is explicit that thought should not go beyond the situation, which means the decision cannot be made until the situation itself changes. Wait in full attention.
