I Ching · Hexagram 57 The Gentle

Hexagram 57 line 3: The Gentle, yang in the third place

Line 3 of a hexagram

I Ching 57.3

Repeated penetration. Humiliation.

Deliberating over and over without acting: gentleness that has become an endless reconsideration. The line calls it humiliating. At some point the wind must stop circling and blow.

Advice. You have thought about it enough; act.

What changes when line 3 moves

Line 3 of Hexagram 57 is yang, a solid line. When it is cast as old yang (a 9) it flips, and the hexagram becomes Hexagram 59, Dispersion: Wind over water dissolving what has frozen: egotism, rigidity and division scattered, and people gathered again around what is sacred.

Read together, the reading moves from The Gentle toward Dispersion. Wind repeated: gentle, persistent penetration, which reaches where force cannot, provided it has a direction. Water below, wind above: wind moving over water, breaking up the ice and scattering the mist. Dispersion describes the dissolving of what has hardened: selfishness that separates people, blockages in feeling, factions in a group. The primary hexagram describes the situation; the changing line is the point of movement in it; the resulting hexagram is where that movement leads. Both hexagrams belong to the reading, and the changing line is the hinge between them.

Line 3 in context

Love & relationships
You have thought about it enough; act. In love and relationships, Hexagram 57 reads: Influence by patience: the same gentle thing, said and done again, until it reaches. Not pressure, not silence. The reading favours it and asks for a direction; gentleness that does not know what it wants becomes drifting.
Career
You have thought about it enough; act. In career, Hexagram 57 reads: Persuasion by repetition and calm: the proposal made again, clarified, brought back. The reading supports gentle persistence toward a clear goal, and the guidance of someone senior. Force will not work here; neither will passivity.
Money
You have thought about it enough; act. In money, Hexagram 57 reads: Small, patient, repeated gains rather than a single stroke. Keep the objective clear and keep at it. The reading warns against gentleness so complete it has no aim.
A decision
You have thought about it enough; act. In decisions, Hexagram 57 reads: Choose the option that can be pursued patiently and repeatedly toward a definite end. The reading favours the gradual approach over the decisive one, and it insists on knowing where you are going.
