Hexagram 59 changing to 20: Dispersion to Contemplation

Line 2 changes.

Where it starts: 59 Dispersion

Wind over water dissolving what has frozen: egotism, rigidity and division scattered, and people gathered again around what is sacred. Water below, wind above: wind moving over water, breaking up the ice and scattering the mist. Dispersion describes the dissolving of what has hardened: selfishness that separates people, blockages in feeling, factions in a group. The tradition's judgement is that the king approaches his temple, that it furthers to cross the great water, and that persistence furthers. The dispersion of division is followed by a gathering around something shared and sacred. The reading says the time is for dissolving what divides, in yourself first, and that large undertakings become possible once the ice has broken.

Where it goes: 20 Contemplation

Looking and being looked at: a moment for seeing the whole clearly before anything is done. Earth below, wind above: wind moving across the land, reaching everywhere. The Chinese character means both to observe and to be observed, and the hexagram holds both: a tower from which the whole country can be seen, and a tower that the whole country can see. Contemplation describes a pause for perspective. The tradition's image is of the moment in a ritual after the purification and before the offering, when sincerity is at its highest and nothing has yet been done. The reading asks you to look, honestly, at the whole situation and at yourself, and to understand that you are also being watched.

The lines that move

  1. Line 2

At the dissolution he hurries to that which supports him. Remorse disappears.

Estranged and bitter, the person turns back to what is stable and supportive rather than nursing the alienation. Moderation, and a return to the reliable. The line removes the regret. Turn back to what supports you instead of feeding the estrangement.

What is changing. The situation of Dispersion is moving toward Contemplation. Dissolve what divides, beginning with your own rigidity, and gather people again around what is shared. As the change completes: Take the wide view, examine yourself honestly, and act only once you have seen the whole.

love and relationships
Now: Something frozen between you is ready to thaw. Dissolve your own hardness first: the pride, the grievance, the position you have been holding. Then gather again around what you share. The reading is favourable to reconciliation and to the large step afterwards. Then: Step back and look at the whole relationship rather than the last argument. See the pattern. The reading also reminds you that how you behave is being observed and forms the other person's view of you.
career
Now: Breaking up factions, thawing a frozen team, dissolving the egotism that has separated people. The reading favours the leader who does this by gathering people around a shared purpose rather than by force, and it supports a large undertaking once the division is gone. Then: A time for assessment rather than action: survey the whole field, understand the people, and set an example by how you conduct the survey. Others are watching how you look at them.
money
Now: Dispersing accumulated blockages: stuck capital, hoarded resources, rigid arrangements. The reading favours letting resources flow toward a shared purpose, and supports the big move once they do. Then: Review before you act. Look at the whole financial picture with honesty, including the parts you have been avoiding. Decisions made from this overview are sounder than any made in the moment.
decisions
Now: Choose the option that dissolves division and reunites people around something they hold in common. The reading supports crossing the great water after the ice breaks; decide in that order. Then: Do not decide yet; see. Take the widest view available, examine your own motives, and let the decision follow from clarity. The pause is not avoidance; it is the offering before the act.
