Hexagram 59 changing to 29: Dispersion to The Abysmal
Line 6 changes.
Where it starts: 59 Dispersion
Wind over water dissolving what has frozen: egotism, rigidity and division scattered, and people gathered again around what is sacred. Water below, wind above: wind moving over water, breaking up the ice and scattering the mist. Dispersion describes the dissolving of what has hardened: selfishness that separates people, blockages in feeling, factions in a group. The tradition's judgement is that the king approaches his temple, that it furthers to cross the great water, and that persistence furthers. The dispersion of division is followed by a gathering around something shared and sacred. The reading says the time is for dissolving what divides, in yourself first, and that large undertakings become possible once the ice has broken.
Where it goes: 29 The Abysmal
Danger repeated, as water in a ravine: the way through is sincerity, and going through rather than around. Water below, water above: the same trigram doubled, a gorge within a gorge. The Abysmal is the hexagram of danger, and it is not a warning to avoid it. Water does not avoid the ravine; it flows into it, fills every hollow, and moves on. The tradition's judgement says that with sincerity there is success in the heart, and that action brings esteem. The reading describes a situation that is difficult, possibly for a while, and it says the way through is to be like water: honest about the depth, undramatic, consistent, and unwilling to stop. Repetition is the teacher here. The danger returns until you have learned to move through it plainly.
The lines that move
He dissolves his blood. Departing, keeping at a distance, going out, is without blame.
Removing oneself and one's own from a danger, wound and all. Dispersion here is distance from harm. The line permits withdrawal to keep those close to you safe. Take yourself and your own out of the danger; distance is right here.
What is changing. The situation of Dispersion is moving toward The Abysmal. Dissolve what divides, beginning with your own rigidity, and gather people again around what is shared. As the change completes: Be like water: honest about the depth, consistent, and willing to go through rather than around.
- love and relationships
- Now: Something frozen between you is ready to thaw. Dissolve your own hardness first: the pride, the grievance, the position you have been holding. Then gather again around what you share. The reading is favourable to reconciliation and to the large step afterwards. Then: A hard stretch, and possibly a repeated one. The reading does not promise it ends soon. It says that sincerity, meaning saying what is true and staying, is what carries a relationship through the ravine. Avoiding the difficulty is what deepens it.
- career
- Now: Breaking up factions, thawing a frozen team, dissolving the egotism that has separated people. The reading favours the leader who does this by gathering people around a shared purpose rather than by force, and it supports a large undertaking once the division is gone. Then: Real difficulty, perhaps the same difficulty returning. Do not seek a way around it; work through it steadily and honestly, one hollow at a time. Consistency under pressure is what earns esteem here.
- money
- Now: Dispersing accumulated blockages: stuck capital, hoarded resources, rigid arrangements. The reading favours letting resources flow toward a shared purpose, and supports the big move once they do. Then: Risk and constraint. Do not take on more; move through what is already there with discipline and truthfulness. The reading warns against clever escapes and rewards steady, honest handling.
- decisions
- Now: Choose the option that dissolves division and reunites people around something they hold in common. The reading supports crossing the great water after the ice breaks; decide in that order. Then: Not a moment for the bold or the evasive option. Choose the one that goes straight through the difficulty with honesty and can be sustained. Expect to pass this way more than once.
