Hexagram 60 changing to 3: Limitation to Difficulty at the Beginning
Line 2 changes.
Where it starts: 60 Limitation
Water in a lake with a bank: limits that give form and save strength, provided they are not galling. Lake below, water above: a lake that holds only so much, and overflows past its limit. Limitation describes measure: the boundaries, rules and economies that give a life or an undertaking its shape. The Chinese character is the joint of a bamboo stalk, the division that makes the whole strong. The tradition's judgement is that limitation brings success, and that galling limitation must not be persisted in. Limits are good when they fit and harmful when they crush. The image is of the wise person creating number and measure and examining the nature of virtue and conduct. The reading says the situation asks for limits, chosen deliberately, and asks you to set them where they strengthen rather than where they strangle.
Where it goes: 3 Difficulty at the Beginning
A birth is hard: the situation is new, tangled and full of promise, and it needs helpers. Thunder below, water above: a storm at the start of things, and a blade of grass pushing through packed earth. Difficulty at the Beginning describes the chaos of a genuine start, not a failure. Everything is possible and nothing is in order yet. The tradition's advice is precise: do not try to act alone, and do not try to finish quickly. Find helpers, sort the strands out one at a time, and treat the confusion as the raw material of what comes next rather than as a sign that you should stop.
The lines that move
Not going out of the gate and the courtyard brings misfortune.
The same restraint, one stage later, when the moment for action has come and is being missed. Limitation held past its usefulness. The line is the warning that measure includes knowing when to move. The time to hold back has passed; go out.
What is changing. The situation of Limitation is moving toward Difficulty at the Beginning. Set limits deliberately, where they give form and save strength, and keep them; loosen any that gall. As the change completes: Persist, get help, and bring order to one strand at a time.
- love and relationships
- Now: Boundaries, agreed and kept: what each of you needs, what each of you will not do, how much is enough. The reading favours limits that both of you accept and warns against ones that gall. The right measure makes the relationship strong at the joints. Then: A new relationship, or a new phase of one, with the tangle that comes with it. The reading is hopeful and asks for patience: let things sort themselves gradually, and do not force a definition before it is ready.
- career
- Now: Discipline and economy: the scope defined, the hours set, the standard fixed. The reading favours clear limits that people can work within, and warns against constraints so tight that they break the people they were meant to shape. Then: The start of a role, a venture or a project, harder than expected and full of loose ends. Get help. The tradition specifically says to appoint helpers rather than manage the chaos alone.
- money
- Now: Budget. The reading is for thrift and measure, limits set deliberately and kept. It warns against both extravagance and a stinginess so severe it becomes its own harm. Find the proportion. Then: Early, unstable, promising. Do not expect returns yet and do not commit more than the beginning needs. Structure the finances before scaling them.
- decisions
- Now: Choose the option with clear, bearable limits. Decide how much is enough before you decide anything else. The reading is against open-ended commitments and against ones so restrictive they cannot be kept. Then: Not the moment for a final decision; the moment for sorting. Untangle the question into its parts, take advice, and decide once the shape is clearer. Persevering is right; forcing is not.
