Hexagram 7 changing to 40: The Army to Deliverance

Line 4 changes.

Where it starts: 7 The Army

Organised collective effort under a capable, principled leader: discipline turns a crowd into a force. Water below, earth above: a reservoir stored under the ground, strength held in reserve among ordinary people. The Army is about organisation for a serious purpose. It needs a leader who is experienced and, above all, trusted, and it needs discipline that the people accept because the cause is just. The tradition's judgement is that persistence and an experienced leader bring good fortune without blame. The reading asks who is leading, whether the cause deserves the effort, and whether the ranks are in order before anything moves.

Where it goes: 40 Deliverance

The storm breaks and the tension releases: act quickly on what needs doing, forgive the rest, and return to normal. Water below, thunder above: a thunderstorm clearing the air, the tension of Obstruction discharged. Deliverance is the moment after difficulty, when the knot is untied. The tradition's judgement has two parts: if there is nowhere further to go, return brings good fortune; if there is somewhere to go, haste brings good fortune. Either finish the release quickly or go back to ordinary life; do not linger in the aftermath. The image adds forgiveness: the wise person pardons mistakes and forgives misdeeds. The reading says the crisis is passing, and the task now is to clear up promptly and not to prolong what has already been resolved.

The lines that move

  1. Line 4

    The army retreats. No blame.

Facing a superior force, the disciplined move is an orderly withdrawal. There is no shame in it; the tradition regards retreat in good order as a mark of a capable leader, not a failed one. Withdraw in good order rather than fight at a disadvantage.

What is changing. The situation of The Army is moving toward Deliverance. Put an experienced, trusted person in charge, agree the purpose, and act with discipline. As the change completes: Act promptly on what the release allows, forgive the rest, and return to ordinary life.

love and relationships
Now: A relationship or family under strain that needs structure and a shared purpose. Someone has to take responsible charge, with the consent of the others. Order given kindly holds; order imposed does not. Then: The tension has broken. Do what remains quickly and forgive what can be forgiven. Do not keep the argument alive after it is over. The reading favours a prompt return to ordinary warmth.
career
Now: Team leadership, a campaign, a large coordinated effort. The reading favours the experienced leader and the disciplined team, and warns against putting the wrong person in charge to keep the peace. Then: The blockage has cleared. Act fast on the things that the clearing makes possible, then let the matter rest. Pardon errors made under pressure. Lingering over the crisis is the one thing that would restart it.
money
Now: Resources held in reserve and deployed in an organised way. Not the moment for scattered spending. A clear plan, executed with discipline, is what the reading supports. Then: Relief from a financial strain. Settle what needs settling quickly and return to normal management. Do not make dramatic moves in the euphoria of release.
decisions
Now: Decide as a commander: who leads, what the objective is, what order is needed. If the cause is not worth the discipline it requires, the reading says not to march. Then: If there is something to do, do it promptly; if not, return to ordinary life. The reading is against dwelling. Choose the option that closes the matter cleanly and forgives what it can.
