Your birthday chart
Once a year the Sun comes back to the exact degree it occupied when you were born. Astrologers cast a chart for that instant and read it as the shape of the year ahead. It almost never falls on your birthday: a year is about a quarter of a day longer than 365, so your return drifts by hours and sometimes lands the day before.
What a return can and cannot say
The technique is old and widely practised, and what it is read for is a theme rather than an event: the house your Sun lands in is treated as where your attention goes, and the rising sign as the manner you meet the year in. None of that has been shown to predict anything. Read it as a frame you try on, and notice whether it fits.

Where to cast it, and why astrologers argue about it
The return moment is not in dispute. The Sun reaches its birth degree at one instant, and any two astrologers with the same ephemeris will agree on it to the minute. What they disagree about is the place. Cast the chart for where you were born, and the houses and angles stay tied to your origin. Cast it for where you happen to be that year, and they move, sometimes by six hours of rotation, which puts an entirely different sign on the Ascendant.
Both are practised. The natal-place version treats the return as a property of you; the relocated version treats it as a property of your year. Out of that second reading grew the habit of travelling for a birthday to secure a particular Ascendant, which is a real thing people do and an expensive way to act on a claim nobody has tested.
This page states which convention it used rather than leaving you to guess, and the angles it gives you follow from that choice. A solar return chart read against a different place is not a correction of this one. It is a different chart.
