What Nine of Swords means

A person sits up in bed with their face in their hands. Nine swords hang on the black wall behind, in a row. The quilt is embroidered with roses and zodiac signs. The bedside is carved with a scene of one figure over another.
In a reading
Three in the morning. Anxiety, dread, grief that arrives when the day's work stops. The swords are on the wall and not in the person, which readers usually take to mean the suffering is real and the threat is elsewhere.
What this card does not mean
It is not a prediction of disaster. It describes a state of mind, and the deck is careful to draw the swords out of reach.
Upright and reversed
Reversals are a choice, not a rule. Roughly half of readers never use them and read every card upright; those who do treat a reversed card as the same card under pressure rather than as its opposite.

The suit
Nine of Swords is a Swords card
Swords are the suit people flinch at, and the suit that is most often useful. They cover decisions, arguments, clarity, anxiety, and the specific pain of knowing something you would rather not. Smith drew this suit hardest: the imagery includes the deck's bleakest pictures, and it also includes its clearest pictures of a mind at work.
A sword cuts in both directions and the suit is not a run of bad news. The double edge is the point: the same blade that wounds is the one that separates a real problem from a rehearsed one.
Swords is the suit of Air, and it is the suit that became Spades in an ordinary playing-card deck.

Across all four suits, the Nine is the suit taken almost to its limit, and what that costs the person holding it.
Nine is the last number before completion, so each Nine shows someone who has nearly arrived and is carrying the weight of it.

Why Nine of Swords is not a birth card
