Astrology vs astronomy: when and why they separated
For most of recorded history these were the same job. The divorce is more recent, and more interesting, than either side usually admits.

The short answer
Astronomy is the scientific study of objects beyond Earth; astrology is the practice of interpreting their positions as meaningful for human affairs. For most of recorded history they were a single discipline — Babylonian scribes, Ptolemy, Kepler and Galileo all did both, and precise astronomical measurement was funded largely because accurate astrology required it. The separation was gradual rather than a single event, running from the Copernican revolution through the seventeenth century, and completing in the eighteenth when astrology lost its place in universities and elite patronage. The decisive factor was not one disproof but the arrival of physical explanation: once gravity accounted for planetary motion, the question of what else planets might do became answerable in principle, and no mechanism for astrological influence was ever found. Today astronomy makes checkable predictions and astrology does not.
One discipline for most of history
The shared history is longer than the separate one, and it is usually flattened by both sides.
Babylonian astronomy from the second millennium BCE produced records of extraordinary quality — eclipse cycles, planetary periods, the Venus tablet of Ammisaduqa — and the reason for the effort was omen interpretation for the king. The observation was rigorous because the stakes were political.
Ptolemy wrote the *Almagest*, the most important astronomical work of antiquity, and the *Tetrabiblos*, the foundational text of Western astrology, and saw no tension between them. Kepler cast horoscopes and derived the laws of planetary motion. Galileo drew up charts for the Medici. Newton's contemporaries were still arguing about it.
So the picture of astronomy as the serious discipline and astrology as its parasite is not historically accurate. Astrology paid for a great deal of the observation, and the demand for astrological precision drove astronomical precision.
What actually pulled them apart
The pressures, roughly in order
- Heliocentrism, from 1543. Not fatal in itself — astrology is geocentric by design, and apparent positions from Earth are what it uses — but it dislodged the idea that Earth occupied a special central position that the cosmos was arranged around.
- The telescope, from 1609. Moons around Jupiter, phases of Venus and the mountains of the Moon showed the heavens as physical places rather than a perfected realm categorically different from Earth.
- Newtonian mechanics, from 1687. This is the decisive one. Once planetary motion had a physical cause, influence became a question about mechanism, and astrology had no candidate that survived examination.
- Institutional collapse, through the 1700s. Astrology lost university chairs, court patronage and respectability, ceasing to be something an educated person was expected to know.
- Statistical testing, from the twentieth century. Studies of chart interpretation against outcomes, including Shawn Carlson's 1985 double-blind test, did not find the claimed effects.
Notice what is missing from that list: a single decisive experiment. Astrology was not refuted so much as left behind by a discipline that had begun answering questions in a different way.
The mechanism problem
This is the sharpest version of the objection, and it deserves stating properly rather than as a slogan.
The known forces fall away fast with distance. The gravitational pull of the midwife present at a birth exceeds that of Mars by a wide margin, simply because she is metres away rather than hundreds of millions of kilometres. Planetary tidal effects on a human body are negligible by any measure. Electromagnetic influence is swamped by the local environment.
Astrologers generally reply that the effect is not causal but correspondent — the sky indicates rather than pushes, a synchronicity rather than a force. That is a coherent position and it is not refuted by pointing at gravity. But it comes at a price: an acausal correspondence makes no prediction about mechanism and cannot be investigated by looking for one, which moves the claim outside what science is equipped to test rather than defending it against a test.

The fourth row is the one that matters most. A framework that cannot be shown to be wrong is not a stronger framework than one that can — it is a framework doing a different kind of work, and it should not borrow the authority of the other.

What the two halves are not allowed to do is lend each other authority. Ephemeris precision does not make an interpretation true, and an interpretation being untestable does not make it harmless.
