BaZi vs Chinese zodiac: why they're not the same thing
One is a complete analytical system. The other is one eighth of it, and they do not even agree on when the year starts.

The short answer
The Chinese zodiac animal is the earthly branch of your year pillar — one of the eight characters in a BaZi chart. BaZi is the complete system. They also disagree on when the year begins: the popular zodiac uses Lunar New Year, which moves between late January and late February, while BaZi uses lichun, the solar term around 4 February. Anyone born between those two dates can have a different animal under each convention, and both are correct under their own rules.

That fifth row is the practical difference. A zodiac reading applies to roughly six hundred million people. A BaZi chart with an hour pillar is considerably more specific — which is the same argument as a Sun sign versus a full natal chart.
The boundary problem
This is where most people discover the two systems are different, usually by getting contradictory answers online.
The popular zodiac turns at Lunar New Year, a lunisolar date that moves between about 21 January and 20 February. BaZi turns at lichun, a solar term that falls around 4 February every year with very little variation.
So if you were born in that window — after Lunar New Year but before lichun, or the reverse — your zodiac animal and your BaZi year branch will differ. Neither site is broken. They are applying different conventions, and the only real error is not saying which.

Which one should you use?
For culture, festivals and knowing which animal year it is — the zodiac. It is a genuine and living tradition and there is nothing wrong with it on its own terms.
For anything analytical — what your chart is short of, how your elements balance, what a period brings — BaZi, because the zodiac simply does not contain that information. One character cannot tell you about elemental balance.
The mistake is treating them as competing answers to the same question. They are answering different questions, and the animal is a component of the larger system rather than a rival to it.
