What is BaZi? The Chinese system that isn't the zodiac

The short answer
BaZi means 'eight characters'. Your birth year, month, day and hour each convert into a pair — a heavenly stem and an earthly branch — giving four pillars and eight characters in total, which are interpreted through the five elements of Chinese metaphysics. The twelve-animal zodiac most people know is one half of one of those four pillars. BaZi is the complete system, it is far more specific, and it needs your exact birth hour to be complete.
The animal is one eighth of it
This is the thing worth understanding first. Your Chinese zodiac animal is the earthly branch of your year pillar — one character out of eight.
A full BaZi chart has four pillars, each with a heavenly stem above and an earthly branch below. Eight characters. The animal you have known since childhood is one of them, and not the most important one.
The most important is the stem of your day pillar — your Day Master — which stands for you personally and is the reference point every other character is read against. Most people who can name their animal have never been told their Day Master, which is a bit like knowing your star sign and never having seen a birth chart.
The four pillars and what each covers

Note the month pillar row. In BaZi the season you were born into carries more weight than anything else when judging whether your chart is supported or depleted — which is why a chart computed without solar terms is not really a BaZi chart.
The five elements, and why they are not four
Western astrology has four elements — fire, earth, air, water — that describe temperament. Chinese metaphysics has five — Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water — and they work differently.
The five sit in two cycles. In the generating cycle each element feeds the next: Wood feeds Fire, Fire makes Earth, Earth bears Metal, Metal carries Water, Water grows Wood. In the controlling cycle each restrains another: Wood breaks Earth, Earth dams Water, Water quenches Fire, Fire melts Metal, Metal cuts Wood.
That structure is what makes BaZi analytical rather than descriptive. The question is not 'what element are you' but 'what does your chart have too much of, what is missing, and what would balance it' — which is a genuinely different kind of question from anything Western sun-sign astrology asks.

What it does not tell you
Traditional BaZi literature contains material on lifespan, illness, and marriage timing. None of it has any evidential basis, and a practitioner willing to give you a date for any of them is telling you about themselves rather than about your chart.

- What does BaZi mean?

- Is BaZi the same as the Chinese zodiac?
- No. Your zodiac animal is the earthly branch of your year pillar — one of the eight characters. BaZi is the complete system and includes the day pillar's stem, your Day Master, which is the most important element of the chart.
- Do I need my birth time for BaZi?
- For a complete chart, yes. The hour pillar is one of four and cannot be computed without a birth time, so a chart without one is missing a quarter of its characters. The other three pillars are exact from the date alone.
- When does the BaZi year start?
- At lichun, the solar term marking the beginning of spring, around 4 February each year. It does not start at Lunar New Year, so people born in late January or early February may have a different animal under each convention.
