Binoculars vs telescope: what to buy first
Buy the binoculars. Almost everyone who buys a telescope first regrets the order.

The short answer
Binoculars first, in nearly every case. They cost far less, need no setup, show a wide field that makes finding things possible, work for daytime use too, and are genuinely excellent on the Moon, star clusters, comets and the Milky Way. A 10x50 pair is the standard recommendation. Buy a telescope once you can navigate the sky and know which objects you want more magnification on.
What the numbers mean
Binoculars are labelled with two numbers, such as 10x50.
The first is magnification — 10x means objects appear ten times closer. The second is aperture in millimetres — 50mm is the diameter of each front lens, and as with telescopes it determines light gathering.
For astronomy, 7x50, 8x42 and 10x50 are the standard choices. Above about 10x, hand-holding becomes difficult: your pulse and small movements are magnified too, and the image shakes enough to lose detail. Higher magnifications need a tripod, which removes much of the convenience advantage.
Why binoculars win for a beginner

That first row is the decisive one. A telescope at 100x shows a patch of sky smaller than the full Moon. If you cannot already find your target by eye, aiming it is genuinely frustrating — and this, more than optical quality, is what defeats beginners.
What binoculars show well
- The Moon. Craters, maria and the terminator in real detail. Better in binoculars than most people expect.
- Star clusters. The Pleiades are arguably better in binoculars than in any telescope, because the whole cluster fits in the field. The Beehive and the Double Cluster likewise.
- The Milky Way. Sweeping along it under a dark sky is one of the best experiences in amateur astronomy, and a telescope cannot do it — the field is too narrow.
- Comets. Typically large and diffuse, which suits a wide field. See comet watching.
- Jupiter's four Galilean moons. Visible as pinpricks beside the planet, and you can watch them shift night to night — see Jupiter's moons.
- Andromeda. Visible as an elongated smudge, and considerably easier to find than in a telescope.
What binoculars cannot do
Saturn's rings. At 10x they are not resolved; Saturn looks slightly oval at best. This is the single most common reason people move to a telescope, and it is a good reason.
Planetary detail. Jupiter's cloud bands, the polar caps on Mars, the phases of Venus — all need more magnification.
Faint galaxies and small nebulae. Aperture and magnification both matter here.
If those are what you want, you want a telescope. But you will find them far more easily having learned the sky with binoculars first.
Buying advice
- Prefer 10x50 or 8x42 unless you have a specific reason otherwise.
- Check the weight. Heavy binoculars held overhead become uncomfortable within minutes, and comfort determines use.
- Porro prism over roof prism at low budgets. Porro designs are cheaper to make well; a cheap roof-prism pair is usually worse than a cheap porro one at the same price.
- Try before buying if you can. Astronomical societies frequently have members happy to let you look through theirs.
- Consider a tripod adapter later. Even 10x binoculars show noticeably more detail when steadied.
