Your animal plus your element: the 60-year cycle
Twelve animals, five elements, and a cycle that only closes after sixty years.

The short answer
Ten heavenly stems pair with twelve earthly branches in sequence, and because the lowest common multiple of ten and twelve is sixty, the full combination repeats only every sixty years. The ten stems are the five elements in yang and yin form, so each animal appears with each element once per cycle — a Wood Horse, a Fire Horse, an Earth Horse and so on, each occurring once in sixty years. 2026 is a Fire Horse year; 2027 is a Fire Goat year.
Why sixty and not sixty-something else
Two wheels turning together. The ten heavenly stems — five elements, each in yang and yin form — and the twelve earthly branches, the animals.
Pair them in sequence: first stem with first branch, second with second, and so on. After twelve steps the branches have completed a cycle but the stems have not, so the pairing continues offset. The two only realign after sixty steps, which is the lowest common multiple of ten and twelve.
This also means only half the possible pairings occur. Ten times twelve is 120, but the sequence pairs odd positions with odd and even with even, so a yang stem never meets a yin branch. Sixty combinations, not 120.
The five elements across the cycle

So a full year designation has three parts: the element, its polarity, and the animal. 2026 is 丙午 — yang Fire, Horse. 2027 is 丁未 — yin Fire, Goat. The element runs for two consecutive years, yang first then yin, before moving to the next.
What the combination is said to mean
The animal supplies a character and the element modulates it. A Fire Horse and a Water Horse are both Horses — energetic, independent, restless — but Fire is said to amplify the intensity while Water softens and redirects it.
The Fire Horse is the most famous combination, and for a specific reason: in Japan, the 1966 Fire Horse year saw a documented and dramatic fall in births, driven by a superstition that women born in that year would be difficult and bring misfortune to husbands. Birth statistics for that year show a collapse of roughly a quarter against surrounding years. The next Fire Horse year is 2026.
That case is worth knowing, because it is a rare instance where a zodiac belief produced an effect large enough to appear clearly in national demographic data — the same phenomenon as dragon babies, operating in reverse.
Your element is not your BaZi element
A common confusion worth resolving. The element attached to your zodiac year is the year stem, one of eight characters in a full BaZi chart.
Your Day Master — the element that actually stands for you in Chinese metaphysics — comes from your day pillar, not your year. Someone described as a Metal Rat by year may have a Wood or Water Day Master, and the Day Master is what a practitioner reads first.
So 'I'm a Fire Horse' names your year pillar accurately and says nothing about your Day Master. Both are real; they answer different questions.
Working out yours
You need your birth year and the correct year boundary — which is not 1 January, and may not be Lunar New Year either. The year boundary problem is the single most common source of wrong answers.
