Flying Star feng shui: the one that changes with time
Every other school reads a fixed building. This one says the answer expires.

The short answer
Flying Star (玄空飛星) is the school of feng shui that adds time. A building gets a natal chart based on when it was built and which way it faces, nine numbers are distributed across a three-by-three grid, and further layers of annual and monthly stars move over the top — so the reading of a given room changes from year to year. It is the most technically involved of the common schools, and it is the reason practitioners talk about periods: the twenty-year Period 8 ran to 2024, and Period 9 runs from 2024 to 2044.
What makes it different from the other schools
Form school reads the landscape. Eight Mansions reads the person against the building. Flying Star reads the building itself as having a chart, and that chart interacts with charts for the current year and month.
The practical consequence is that Flying Star advice has an expiry date. A room that reads well this year may not next year, and a consultation is expected to be revisited. Any school that gives you a permanent answer is not this one.
How a chart is built
- The period. Twenty-year blocks numbered 1 to 9. When the building was completed — or substantially renovated — sets its period number.
- The facing direction. Measured precisely, in one of twenty-four mountains rather than eight rough directions. This is why an accurate bearing matters so much.
- The base chart. The period number is placed in the centre and the remaining numbers distributed around the nine palaces in a fixed sequence.
- Mountain and water stars. Two further sets derived from the facing, governing people and health on one side and money and opportunity on the other.
- Annual and monthly stars. A further layer flying over the top, which is what makes the reading change with time.

The annual 5 Yellow is the single most-discussed thing in popular Flying Star: each year it lands in a different palace, and the standard advice is to avoid major renovation in that sector for the year. It is also the clearest example of how the school works — the advice is specific, dated, and expires.
Period 9, and why 2024 keeps coming up
Period 8 ran from 2004 to 2024 and Period 9 from 2024 to 2044. Practitioners treat a period change as significant: the star that was 'timely' changes, which alters which sectors of every existing building are read as favourable.
It also produces a burst of consultancy demand, which is worth noticing without being cynical about. A tradition whose advice expires on a published schedule has a business model built into its cosmology.
