The Lo Shu square: the oldest magic square there is
Three thousand years old, load-bearing in Chinese metaphysics — and the birthday version is not the ancient part.

The short answer
The Lo Shu (洛書) is a 3×3 arrangement of the numbers 1 to 9 in which every row, column and diagonal sums to 15. It is the oldest known magic square, attested in Chinese sources over two thousand years old, and legend attaches it to a pattern on the shell of a turtle emerging from the river Luo. It is load-bearing rather than decorative: Flying Star, the Eight Mansions directions and the elemental assignment of every digit from 1 to 9 all sit on it. The popular practice of filling it with a birth date and reading the missing numbers is far more recent and comes largely from Indian numerology.

Eight lines — three rows, three columns, two diagonals — and all of them total 15. There is exactly one such arrangement of 1 to 9 up to rotation and reflection, which is part of why it fascinated people long before anyone had the vocabulary of combinatorics.

These assignments are what a feng shui consultant means by 'the wealth star' or 'the illness star'. They are also why 5 has no Kua number: the centre has no compass direction, so the people who would have it are redistributed.
The birthday version is not the old part
Filling the grid with the digits of a birth date, then reading the missing numbers and the complete lines as personality traits, is a twentieth-century practice with roots in Indian numerology rather than Chinese metaphysics.
The 'Arrows of Mahabharata' — the named readings for complete or empty lines across the grid — are the most recent layer of all, and the name itself points away from China.
None of that makes it uninteresting. It does mean that presenting a birth-date grid reading as three thousand years old, which is extremely common, is conflating two traditions that met recently. Our Lo Shu calculator says so on the page.
Where you will meet the square again
- Flying Star distributes its nine numbers across exactly this grid, and the sequence they move in is derived from it.
- Eight Mansions takes its eight directions from the eight non-central palaces.
- Lucky number readings take each digit's element from this table, which is how a phone number can be scored against a BaZi chart at all.
- The 5 Yellow is the centre palace, which is why it is treated as having nowhere to go and nothing to counterbalance it.

- Why is 5 special?
- It sits at the centre, which has no compass direction. That is why Kua number 5 is redistributed to 2 for men and 8 for women, and why the 5 star in Flying Star is treated as having nothing to balance it.
