Light pollution maps: finding dark skies near you
Most people have never seen the Milky Way. The fix is usually a shorter drive than you expect.

The short answer
Light pollution is measured on the Bortle scale, running from 1 for the darkest skies to 9 for inner city. Most urban and suburban residents live under Bortle 7 to 9, where the Milky Way is invisible. Online light pollution maps overlay satellite-measured sky brightness onto a map so you can find darker locations. Moving from Bortle 8 to Bortle 4 typically means an hour's drive and transforms what is visible.

The step from 4 to 3 is where most people first genuinely see the Milky Way. The step from 7 to 4 is the one that requires a drive and changes everything.
How to read a map
Light pollution maps use satellite measurements of upward light emission, converted to predicted sky brightness and rendered as colour overlays.
The colours run in a standard sequence: white and red for the worst skies, then orange, yellow, green, blue, and finally grey and black for the darkest. Getting from a red zone to a green or blue one is the goal.

Practical site selection
What to check before driving anywhere
- The Bortle class from a map. Aim for 4 or better; 3 if you can reach it.
- Horizon obstructions. Trees and hills matter. A field with a clear southern horizon beats a darker site in a valley.
- Legal access and safety. Public land, a car park you are permitted to use, or a site with permission. Tell someone where you are going. Standing in a dark field at 2am invites questions if a landowner appears.
- Nearby lighting. A single security light or a road with passing headlights will repeatedly destroy your dark adaptation.
- Elevation, if available. Getting above low haze helps, though it is a smaller factor than distance from cities.
Dark sky places
A growing number of locations hold formal dark-sky designations from the International Dark-Sky Association — reserves, parks and communities that have committed to controlling lighting. These are reliably good and usually have facilities, which matters at 1am in winter.
Many are in national parks and remote uplands. If one is within a few hours of you, a single trip will show you more sky than a year of back-garden observing.
It is getting worse, and that is measurable
Sky brightness has been increasing globally, and studies using citizen-science star counts have found the rate of increase to be substantial — faster than satellite measurements alone suggested, partly because satellites are less sensitive to the blue-rich light that modern LED fixtures emit.
The transition to LED street lighting was expected to reduce light pollution through better directional control. In practice, lower running costs have often led to more light being installed, and the blue-heavy spectrum scatters more in the atmosphere than the old sodium lamps did.
It is one of the few forms of pollution that is trivially reversible — a shielded fixture pointing down solves it locally, immediately, and usually saves money. That is worth knowing when your council next consults on street lighting.
