What is my Human Design type? The BodyGraph, explained
A modern system reads your birth moment into a BodyGraph of nine centres, and your type falls out of which ones light up.

Before the detail
Your Human Design type is one of four: Generator, Manifestor, Projector or Reflector, with Manifesting Generator as a Generator subtype. It is read from your BodyGraph, the chart Human Design computes from your birth date, time and place. Planetary positions land in gates, matching gates complete channels, channels define centres, and your type is read from which centres are defined and how they connect. Each type comes with a strategy the system teaches, such as a Generator's "wait to respond". Human Design is a modern synthesis, created in 1987, and we present it as metaphysical practice rather than scientific fact.
A modern system, honestly labelled
Human Design is young. It was created by Ra Uru Hu, a Canadian-born former advertising executive, after an experience on Ibiza in 1987, and everything in it dates from then. There is no unbroken line of day-keepers behind it, the way there is behind the Maya Tzolk'in, and no centuries of village practice, the way there is behind the Javanese Weton. It is a modern synthesis, and the honest way to hold it is as exactly that.
What it synthesises is a lot. The 64 gates of its mandala are the 64 hexagrams of the I Ching. The body it draws — nine energy centres rather than the classical seven chakras — comes down through the Theosophical re-reading of the chakra system, not from any Indian text; our piece on what the chakras are traces that lineage. The planetary positions are Western astrology's, computed twice. And the channels joining the centres are patterned on the Kabbalah's tree of life. Four borrowed vocabularies, welded into one diagram called the BodyGraph.
None of this makes the system meaningless, and none of it makes the system true. A practice can be nearly forty years old and still give its practitioners something real to work with — a language for how they make decisions, a permission slip to stop forcing what has never worked. What it cannot honestly borrow is the authority of the ancient sources it quotes. We'd rather tell you its age and let the practice stand on what it actually does.
How a type is computed
A Human Design chart starts from your birth date, time and place, and computes two sets of planetary positions. The first, called the Personality, is the sky at the moment of your birth. The second, called the Design, is the sky at the moment the Sun sat exactly 88 degrees of solar arc before its birth position — roughly three months earlier, though it is 88 degrees, not 88 days, and the exact timestamp has to be solved for.
Each planetary position lands in one of the 64 gates. When two gates at the opposite ends of the same channel are both activated — by either chart, or one from each — the channel completes, and the two centres it joins become defined: coloured in on the BodyGraph, read as fixed and reliable in the person. Centres with no completed channel stay undefined, read as open and impressionable.
Type then falls out of the wiring. No centres defined at all makes a Reflector, the rarest chart — about one in a hundred by the tradition's own telling. A defined Sacral centre makes a Generator, and if a motor centre is also connected through to the Throat, the Manifesting Generator subtype. No Sacral but a motor reaching the Throat makes a Manifestor. Everything else is a Projector. That is the whole decision tree — your type is a statement about which centres light up and how they connect, nothing more mysterious than that.
The four types
Human Design counts four types, with Manifesting Generator as a Generator subtype carrying its own strategy. Each comes with three labels the practice leans on: a strategy (how the system says you should meet life), a signature (the feeling when you're living correctly, by its lights), and a not-self theme (the feeling when you're not). The table gives the standard set.
| Type | Strategy | Signature | Not-self theme |
|---|---|---|---|
| Generator | Wait to respond | Satisfaction | Frustration |
| Manifesting Generator | Respond, then inform | Satisfaction | Frustration, then anger |
| Manifestor | Inform before you act | Peace | Anger |
| Projector | Wait for the invitation | Success | Bitterness |
| Reflector | Wait a lunar cycle | Surprise | Disappointment |
The strategy is the practical layer, the part people actually use. The rest of the chart — Authority, Profile, Definition, the individual channels — refines it, but ask anyone in the practice what their Design changed and they will almost always answer in terms of their strategy: they stopped initiating and waited to respond, or they stopped waiting and started informing.
What people do with a type
In the lived practice, a type is a decision-making posture. Generators — the majority of charts — are taught to stop initiating from the head and instead respond to what shows up, trusting the gut yes or no. Projectors are taught to stop volunteering and wait to be invited into work and relationships. Manifestors are taught they can initiate, but should inform the people their actions will hit. Reflectors are taught to take a full lunar cycle before big decisions.
Notice what those instructions have in common: each one is a brake on a familiar way of burning out. Don't force it; don't offer advice nobody asked for; don't blindside people; don't decide under pressure. A person who takes their strategy seriously often ends up with more patience and better boundaries, and it would be strange if that didn't feel like relief. The signature feelings are real feelings, whatever produced them.
That is also the honest limit. The practice can be worth doing while the mechanism claimed for it, an aura type fixed by the sky at your birth and at 88 solar degrees before it, has no evidence behind it. Human Design has not been validated by any substantial body of peer-reviewed research, and the system is too young to have the standing of the traditions it borrows from. We hold both facts at once: the instruction helped, and the energy-field explanation remains an article of faith. Saying so doesn't spoil anything.
Finding your own type
Human Design needs your exact birth time, more than most systems do. The Moon crosses a gate roughly every ten hours, and a single gate can complete a channel, define a centre and flip a type, so two charts drawn hours apart on the same day can come out Generator and Projector. A guessed noon is not a workaround here; our piece on what to do without a birth time covers which systems survive the missing hour and which don't.
The AsterNym Human Design calculator computes your BodyGraph from your birth date, time and place: your type, strategy, authority, profile and definition, with every convention stated and the Design timestamp shown so the calculation can be audited.
If you don't know your birth time, it does the honest version of the calculation: it scans the entire day, finds every moment a result would change, and reports which type holds across which hours. You learn either that your type is safe all day, or exactly which possibilities your missing birth certificate leaves open. No guessing, and no pretending noon is knowledge.
Questions people ask
- What is a Human Design type?
- A Human Design type is the top-level category of a BodyGraph chart: Generator, Manifestor, Projector or Reflector, with Manifesting Generator as a Generator subtype. It is read from which of the chart's nine centres are defined by completed channels and how they connect, and each type carries a strategy the system teaches.
- Is Human Design scientific?
- No. Its claims have not been validated by any substantial body of peer-reviewed research. It is a modern metaphysical system, created in 1987, synthesising the I Ching, a Theosophical reading of the chakras, Western astrology and the Kabbalah. Many people find its practices useful, which is a separate question from whether its mechanism is real.
- What are the Human Design types?
- There are four: Generator (strategy: wait to respond), Manifestor (inform before you act), Projector (wait for the invitation) and Reflector (wait a lunar cycle). Manifesting Generator is a Generator subtype whose strategy is to respond, then inform. Generators and Manifesting Generators together make up the majority of charts; Reflectors are the rarest.
- Do I need my exact birth time for Human Design?
- Yes, more than for most systems. The Moon changes gates roughly every ten hours, and one gate can complete a channel and change your type, so charts drawn hours apart can differ. If your time is unknown, the AsterNym calculator scans the whole day and reports which results hold stable and where they change, rather than guessing noon.
- What is a strategy in Human Design?
- A strategy is the way of meeting life the system assigns to each type: wait to respond for Generators, inform before acting for Manifestors, wait for the invitation for Projectors, wait a lunar cycle for Reflectors. In practice it is the part of the chart people actually use day to day.
