Yin and yang: the idea underneath everything else
The most misunderstood idea in Chinese thought, and the characters mean the two sides of a hill.

In one paragraph
Yin (陰) and yang (陽) are not opposing forces and not a moral pair. They are relational categories: nothing is yin or yang in itself, only next to something else. They generate each other rather than fighting, each holds the seed of the other, and each turns into the other at its extreme. Every Chinese metaphysical system on this site inherits that structure.
The original meaning is embarrassingly concrete
The characters mean the shady side and the sunny side of a hill. 陰 is the north-facing slope, 陽 the south-facing one. Everything else is extension from that, and the observation already holds the whole idea: which side is shady depends on where the sun is, and it changes through the day. In the clinic we never call a patient yin or yang, only more yin than they were.
Yin and yang is the best idea in Chinese thought and the worst-used word in Western wellness, and I would keep the first and drop the second.
Four rules that do most of the work
Relative, never absolute: water is yin next to fire and yang next to ice. They generate each other, as night makes dawn. Each contains the other, which is what the dots in the taijitu mean. At the extreme each becomes the other: maximum yang is the summer solstice, exactly when yin begins.
What it is not
Not good and evil; 'too much yin' is an imbalance, not a fault. Not male and female; that is one correspondence among dozens. Not a balance you achieve and keep; the proportion is supposed to move.
Where you meet it on this site
In BaZi, each Heavenly Stem is a yin or yang version of an element. In the Ten Gods, polarity turns five relationships into ten. In the almanac, the day gods split into yellow-path and black-path days.
Is yin bad and yang good?
No. Neither is preferred and neither is a moral category. They are relational descriptions, and Chinese almanacs treat imbalance as the problem rather than either quality itself.
Is yin female and yang male?
That association exists as one correspondence among many, but every person and thing has both, and drawing conclusions about people from it is a modern misuse the classical texts don't support.
How does yin and yang relate to the five elements?
Each element comes in a yin and a yang form, producing the ten Heavenly Stems used in BaZi. Yang Wood and yin Wood are both Wood and read very differently, conventionally a tree and a vine.
