Where it starts: 12 Standstill

Heaven and earth apart: the wrong people are in charge, and the right response is dignified withdrawal. Earth below, heaven above: each moving away from the other, so that nothing connects. Standstill is the mirror of Peace. Communication fails, the petty prosper and the worthy are sidelined, and effort in the ordinary channels comes to nothing. The tradition does not counsel despair; it counsels withdrawal into one's own integrity. The wise person in a time of standstill does not compromise to get on, does not accept honours from the wrong hands, and waits for the turn, which the later lines say is coming.

Where it goes: 6 Conflict

A dispute you are sincere in but cannot win outright: meet halfway, and take advice before going further. Water below, heaven above: the two move in opposite directions and cannot meet. Conflict describes a disagreement that has hardened, where you may be in the right and still cannot carry it through by force. The tradition is specific: sincerity matters, obstruction is real, stopping halfway brings good fortune and pushing to the end brings misfortune. It recommends seeing the great person, meaning someone impartial who can arbitrate, and it says plainly that this is not the time to cross the great water, not the time for large undertakings.

   They bear and endure; for the small, good fortune. The great person accepts the standstill and succeeds.

   Lesser people get on by flattering the powerful; the worthy person refuses and accepts the cost. The line says the second course is the one that ends in success, though not immediately. Do not buy your way through with flattery; endure instead.

What is changing. The situation of Standstill is moving toward Conflict. Withdraw into your own integrity, refuse honours from the wrong hands, and wait for the turn. As the change completes: Stop the dispute halfway, seek an impartial view, and start nothing large until it is settled.

Now: Communication has stopped and effort is not getting through. Do not force it and do not compromise yourself to restore contact. Hold your own centre, be patient, and let the standstill run its course; it does. Then: An argument in which both of you feel right. Winning it is not available. The reading asks you to stop before the point of no return, to bring in a fair outside view if you need one, and to look at how the disagreement began.

Now: The wrong people are being rewarded and your work is not reaching anyone. This is not a time to campaign for recognition or to accept a role that costs your integrity.
