The meaning of Hexagram 12
Earth below, heaven above: each moving away from the other, so that nothing connects. Standstill is the mirror of Peace. Communication fails, the petty prosper and the worthy are sidelined, and effort in the ordinary channels comes to nothing. The tradition does not counsel despair; it counsels withdrawal into one's own integrity. The wise person in a time of standstill does not compromise to get on, does not accept honours from the wrong hands, and waits for the turn, which the later lines say is coming.

Communication has stopped and effort is not getting through. Do not force it and do not compromise yourself to restore contact. Hold your own centre, be patient, and let the standstill run its course; it does.

The wrong people are being rewarded and your work is not reaching anyone. This is not a time to campaign for recognition or to accept a role that costs your integrity. Keep your standards, keep your head down, and wait.
Hexagram 12 for money
Blocked. Ventures started now stall; the environment is not receptive. Conserve, avoid the tempting deal from a dubious source, and wait for conditions to reopen.
Hexagram 12 for decisions
Not the time for the ambitious choice. If a decision cannot wait, choose the option that preserves your position and your integrity. The tradition says the standstill turns; decide as someone who will be here when it does.

Read from the bottom. A changing line flips, and the hexagram it changes into is named with each.
The standstill passes. First standstill, then good fortune.
The end of stagnation and the beginning of movement. The line credits effort: the standstill does not simply expire; it is ended by people acting rightly when the moment opens. Good fortune follows.

The standstill ends. Good fortune for the great person. It might fail; tie it to a cluster of mulberry shoots.
The turn is here, and the line insists on caution at exactly this moment. The tradition's mulberry roots are deep and tangled; tie the new success to something equally firm, and keep asking whether it could still fail.

The standstill begins to lift, and the person who acts now must do so under a real mandate rather than personal ambition. Acting for a purpose larger than yourself, with others who share it, is blessed.

The petty have risen into positions they cannot fill and are beginning to feel it. The line is about the incompetent becoming aware of their limits. If this is your situation, the shame is the first sign of the turn.

They bear and endure; for the small, good fortune. The great person accepts the standstill and succeeds.
Lesser people get on by flattering the powerful; the worthy person refuses and accepts the cost. The line says the second course is the one that ends in success, though not immediately.
