Hexagram 15 for decisions: Modesty

謙 Qiān · A decision

Choose the option that balances rather than the one that impresses. Where you have too much of something, give some up; where too little, add. The modest choice is the one that carries through.

Mountain below, earth above: height held beneath the ground. Modesty is the only hexagram in the book in which every line is favourable, and it describes greatness that does not need to show itself. The tradition's judgement is simple: modesty creates success, and the wise person carries things through. The reading is about levelling, reducing what is too much and adding to what is too little, in oneself and in the situation. It does not mean self-abasement. The mountain is still there; it is simply not making a point of itself.

Advice
Reduce what is excessive, add to what is lacking, and let substance speak for itself.
Warning
Modesty that is only manners, with nothing behind it, is not what the hexagram rewards.

    Nothing that does not further modesty in movement. Be modest and be active; do not hide behind humility.

  5. Line 5 · changes into 39 Obstruction

    Not boasting of wealth before the neighbour. It is fitting to attack with force. Nothing that does not further. When firmness is needed, use it without display and without apology.

  6. Line 6 · changes into 52 Keeping Still

    Modesty that expresses itself. It is fitting to set armies marching to chastise one's own city and country. Put your own house in order first; that is the modest use of strength.
