Looking and being looked at: a moment for seeing the whole clearly before anything is done. Earth below, wind above: wind moving across the land, reaching everywhere. The Chinese character means both to observe and to be observed, and the hexagram holds both: a tower from which the whole country can be seen, and a tower that the whole country can see. Contemplation describes a pause for perspective. The tradition's image is of the moment in a ritual after the purification and before the offering, when sincerity is at its highest and nothing has yet been done. The reading asks you to look, honestly, at the whole situation and at yourself, and to understand that you are also being watched.

Heaven and earth apart: the wrong people are in charge, and the right response is dignified withdrawal. Earth below, heaven above: each moving away from the other, so that nothing connects. Standstill is the mirror of Peace. Communication fails, the petty prosper and the worthy are sidelined, and effort in the ordinary channels comes to nothing. The tradition does not counsel despair; it counsels withdrawal into one's own integrity. The wise person in a time of standstill does not compromise to get on, does not accept honours from the wrong hands, and waits for the turn, which the later lines say is coming.

   Someone who understands the workings of the whole and is invited to take part in them. Insight has become useful. The line favours accepting a role of influence, as an honoured guest rather than a subordinate. Your understanding is wanted; accept the invitation to use it.

What is changing. The situation of Contemplation is moving toward Standstill. Take the wide view, examine yourself honestly, and act only once you have seen the whole. As the change completes: Withdraw into your own integrity, refuse honours from the wrong hands, and wait for the turn.

Now: Step back and look at the whole relationship rather than the last argument. See the pattern. The reading also reminds you that how you behave is being observed and forms the other person's view of you. Then: Communication has stopped and effort is not getting through. Do not force it and do not compromise yourself to restore contact. Hold your own centre, be patient, and let the standstill run its course; it does.
