Discipline makes the fool learn. Fetters help; continuing that way brings shame.
At the start, rules and limits are useful; a beginner needs structure. The line adds that structure imposed for too long becomes humiliation. Use discipline to open the mind, not to close it.

What changes when line 1 moves
Line 1 of Hexagram 4 is yin, a broken line. When it is cast as old yin (a 6) it flips, and the hexagram becomes Hexagram 41, Decrease: Less at the base to strengthen the top: a season of reduction that is fortunate when done with sincerity.
